NCAA rules say ties aren't broken unless it is for advancement purposes. Conferences may use tiebreakers if they wish. The NCAA tiebreaker is scoring each team's top 5 head to head. So the first runners are compared to each other. If the first runner from Team A beats Team B, they get a point. This is repeated for the next 4 pairs. First to 3 points win.
calling it now, Navy is going to nats! Georgetown and princeton are both not as good as usual and this navy team has some real horses. villanova, then navy out of the mid atlantic.
Unfortunately, if they don't finish top 2 in their region they won't be going. Instead of collecting scalps at Pre-nats or Wisconsin, they were stuck beating down on Army. And winning Paul Short didn't get them anything with the weak field this year. Hopefully they beat Georgetown.
unfortunately they are also going to have to beat princeton because as you mentioned only two will go. Princeton had a great showing at heps, should be a good battle and it might come down to the jump up to 10k
as good as they are, sadly Navy will not be going to nationals. They didn't structure their season around earning any at large points and there is just no way that they will finish top 2 at Mid-Atlantic. They have to beat at least 2 of the 3 (Villanova, Georgetown, Princeton) and while it is possible one of thsoe teams has a bad day, they are all just plain better than Navy is.
If they had gone to any bigger points they very well could have grabbed some at large points but they didn't and it's going to cost them.

That NCAA rule was changed in 2013. The new rule calls for ties to be broken in all meets.
I'm not saying whether or not I approve or disapprove of the rule, I'm just clarifying the fact that there was a rule change and that the current rule was followed correctly to break the tie.
Maybe it would have helped if the officials knew the rule as well on Saturday. They called it a tie, see the Patriot League tweet about the Women's race at 12:11 and announced it a tie. Then a hour later they decided to " look up ruling " . It was a bit of a joke. Maybe the people that need " to wake and smell the coffee" is the officials.
You're right, of course, that the officials should have known the recent change in the rules and made the correct call immediately.
It's probably a good idea for coaches and officials to have the most current set of rules with them at competitions, given the fact that rules get changed from time to time and the correct ruling one year may be incorrect the following year.
How do you see the individuals and the teams finishing in the mid atlantic?
I think Navy could get the second auto spot or get pushed in. I think PSU is overrated and Navy is definitely better than them.
As for individuals I think Schroeder, Mahalsky, McGowan, and Garcia-Garrison could contend for national spots. Mahalsky and Schroeder have been running well all season. Garcia-Garrison and McGowan looked great at leagues too. Mahalsky should bounce back.

well, navy couldnt muster up enough to beat georgetown, much less princeton or penn state. but makalsky came up big, and schroeder ran pretty well to get to nationals
