This thread is totally embarrassing to all Americans and the entire running community. Yes, trolls love to have their fun but the asinine-ness displayed here is nauseating. I have a real hard time believing that any of these jerks are actual runners. What you saw today was amazing courage and fortitude and some of you can't seem to handle that. FYI - Meb showed the same strenghts before during two Olympic marathons and New York. Remember he beat any number of great runners at the London Olympics.

The one thing that is odd about Boston, it is a course that you can either blow up on or PR on. Downhill courses have that double-edged sword effect.

Look at Shalane Flanagan. Although she "blew up", she still set a 3 minute PR. She just had the unfortunate luck of Rita Jeptoo and others going with her. In some ways, Shalane could have been viewed as more of a threat from her competitors than Meb was from his competitors.

If a pack of 6 or 7 went with Meb, he would have likely been toast. Someone would have got him for the win. He would have probably finished 3rd, maybe 2nd. However, it is a easier call to make when a pack goes. If you are a single runner, going for Meb could have meant you could have blown up also and the pack would have gotten you as well.

It's not an easy calculus. Just probably an easy calculus for those who last won a race back in high school and have a tin-foil medal to go with their tin-foil hat.

Meb did not even have to work to pull decisively away. Since when to the African elites run like that? What were their mile splits during the 5 - 6 miles when Meb was really pulling away? Sorry, but they simply do NOT run like that in a major marathon. EVER.

Tell me how Meb's victory was fixed? He just set a PR to become the 2014 Boston Marathon Champion. As all distance runners know, on race day it is not about what your PR is, it is how you perform that day and today Meb outperformed all the competition. What I think happened is no one in the field respected Meb and let him go thinking they could bring him back in when they wanted but Meb proved once again to not underestimate him.

Yes on paper for the longest time his PR said 2:09 but Meb has always had the ability in my opinion to run 2:05-2:06 but in order for a fast time to happen everything has to be clicking right not just on race day but also during the months and months of training leading up to the race.

So instead of coming up with pointless conspiracy theories how about congratulating one of the hardest and well deserving champions in the sport.

Kenyans have run like that mostly every Boston save for 2011. I have watched the race on TV or live stream all but one year since 1997. The one year I didn't watch it, I ran it. Most elite runners run it conservatively. Very few gun it from the get go and survive the pacing.

Boston's course is not like other major marathon courses. Different animal altogether. I am pretty sure that the Kenyans know that and they respect that.

Seriously, check the mile splits for the "chase" pack during Meb's "surge". They deliberately ran absurdly slow. Not reasonably conservatively. Absurdly slowly.

Excellent reasoning and sound logic. Do you have anything at all to add or is name calling as advanced as your skills get?

Anyone who legitimately believes you can fix a marathon race needs to kill themselves, hopefully before you reproduce.

As for letting people go, it's happened plenty of times. Hartmann was allowed an early lead two years ago I believe. The top africans usually don't give chase when some dude that they don't view as a threat takes off. They won't let a Kipsang or Mutai go, but a Hartmann or Meb, or other runner not seen as a true contender? That's somewhat routine.

It is routine to let someone with Meb's creditials slip away? Let's hear some examples.

Don't fall back and say bc he is old his creditials don't matter, let's hear a list of names of strong marathoners that a world class pack has let go, and not even tried to reel in after it is apparent that the threat is legit.
