Yep, dear old Fred. Seriously, I've seen some of these masters. There's no way a 50+ year old man or woman has the musculature some of them have. I mention the ladies because it seems that they get less scrutiny. Who wants to accuse mom or grandma of doping?

Yes, EPO is much more serious but Fred's a science teacher. You think he didn't know what he was ingesting? You don't think stimulants help? Try coffee or a red bull before training.
So this local hero got caught? Did someone narc on him or something? Is anyone in the know?
Everyone loves to question older elite athletes (Lagat for example) still running at the top or near top of their game, then you have Kieser, who failed a test, but comes back and is still rolling the same times...
Oh, so that's the rule now. If you get caught cheating with banned substances, as long as you run the same times as you did when you were on them it's all good. Thanks for clarifying.

Sub-elites and Masters are an undeserved community by WADA. Btw, a sub-elite or masters elite runner can make about $5K - $10K cash a year if they know how to line up their races correctly.
Rule 1: Identify the money races.
Rule 2: Find out whose registered and avoid guys who are better than you.
Rule 3: Only run fast enough to win unless there is money for breaking a record and run 2 races in a week when the schedule permits.
Rule 4: Learn how to convert gifts to cash.

I've just been made aware of the Team Ohio photo floating around and thoughts on cheating from others on the team. As a middle school teacher and sponsored runner under Brooks ID program and Team Ohio, I want to make people aware that Carnes affiliation with Team Ohio in no way represents what Team Ohio stands for and/or shows the type of character/integrity of the athletes that make up Team Ohio or any of their other sponsors. Out of respect for other people on our team, I make this statement because we are not only runners but professionals in other fields and rumors like this have no weight simply because of Carnes actions and affiliation with us. His time with us training wise and racing wise was almost nonexistent.
Carnes was on the 4th place team at Shamrock/USA 8k club champs last year, the club team as well in XC in 2012. Will he be allowed to continue with the team after his suspension? Kieser (who has a positive to his name) was on the 5th place team this year from Shamrock/Club 8k Champs.
Andrew actually did not sign the 2014 Team Ohio contract and prior to this year we did not have an official "contract". Individuals were free to join and run as a "team" at club events. Fred is on the team because we believe his violation was not intentional. You could buy what Fred took at your local grocery and it was a mistake on his end to not know what he was taking. We have every reason to believe Fred is no longer taking the "banned substance" and I am sure he will be tested at any master’s championship he will run. Fred's motives were to counteract the weight gain he had from gas station donuts and the 20oz Coca-Cola bottle he would pound before Saturday morning long runs. Fred served his time and his "violation" was not related to Andrews by any means. Andrew is a different story because his motives were clear. He took EPO to try to come back from injury faster and make the trials. It wasn't to make easy money on the roads (he could have done that without drugs). He has run sub 66 and he believed the extra edge would help get him under 65. My answer to if he will be let back on the team, most likely not. Many locals are under fire because of the choices he made and many have been deemed guilty by association. There is no "doping culture" in North Eastern Ohio just a few individuals who decided to make some stupid choices.

It sounds like you talked with him. The injury excuse is the same thing Hesch said. It sounds like he is remorseful. Did he just turn himself in or do you know how he was caught?
He was confronted by USADA. They stated that they had evidence against him for the purchase of EPO. He admitted to it and his ban started at that point in time.
It's things like this that open your eyes to the possibility that ones actions might have further reaching consequences than are considered at the time.....he's certainly fully responsible for his own actions, but I can't help but wonder if it might have been diff had I never went that road....kinda a $#**y thing to wonder if you're actions encouraged that.....I suppose the remorse gets a little stronger when you see kids doing the same dumb $#**dude~

He probably registered and ran races for the competition or fun and wound up winning money.
I won $50 one time with a 17:50 5K. I had no hopes beyond placing in my age group going into the race.
I have friends that will go to great lengths to find small races that can be won with relatively slow times. They bring home all sorts of swag and just enough cash to cover part of their expenses. I am talking 3 hour marathon type times.

Would you prefer people say "fastest guy in the area". "Local elite" is pretty much shorthand for that.
I think we all understand what is meant by the term. By no means is anyone saying that these are Olympic level runners.
