He is impossible to talk to, zero personality at all. Very gruff. But, the man can recruit. I don't like him the person, but I think he will do good things for the Iowa State men.

As I said, he was a great runner and should be proud of his accomplishments. He has no reason to look back in regret unless he can't move on in an honorable way.

I'm not related to the USATF or any other jock strap, fashionable women's wear or shoe company sponsor. I think it's funny that most posts here are people who do have a vested interest in such commercial enterprises.

Distance running in the USA fell off the map in the 1990's. But it was rejuvenated in the early 2000's and this gave young runners the opportunity to compete at the international level for many years after college if they were capable.

I have a problem with people who took advantage of this opportunity and then decided that they should make it difficult for others to receive the same opportunity that they were given. These people tend to be narcissists.

I'm imagining the NOP communications manager hiring process with Salazar in the room. Too funny. Same talking points here have been hammered out over several screennames. We got your message.

Martin will definitely have Iowa State back in cross country. Probably top 5 at NCAAs in 2-3 years, like he did at Oklahoma.

Zero personality?. To people he doesn't feel like personalizing with that talked to him one time maybe.

I saw that once when some random coach at the US Nationals came down to congratulate him for winning Big 12's at Oklahoma after getting pushed out of Oregon. Martin totally ignored the guy.

He's one of the most personable characters I've ever met when you are in his inner circle. Maybe not so much otherwise.

But you can't deny his record. Success every where he has been from the start when he was an unpaid volunteer at Virginia. He knows what works and at 63 years old I'm sure is still outworking any coach in the NCAA.

Back to Ulrey -he did a Kwik-E with flotrack (I miss those, so much faster and less intrusive to read than listen to interviews) a few years ago

"1) I did a time trial in the 1,000. I went through the 800 in 1:50-point and hit the K in 2:18. That was just the first part of the workout. I ended doing a workout after that.

You want to share the rest of that workout or is that something you don't want to put out there?

Just to give to give you some juicy gossip here.

I love it.

A little bit of everything. We've even discussed running the 10K on the track. We're not limiting ourselves to running one particular distance. Not the 800, not the 1,500, not even the 5K. All options are on the table at this point... What we plan to do is come out and hit this cross country season hard. Run it like a 10K guy. Not like a miler who's trying to race 10K guys, but a run it like a 10K runner. Then go through the indoor season and run some 800s—obviously I'll be unattached as I'm all out of eligibility—maybe try to lower my mile PR and just try to stay fresh for the outdoor season. Then come out and run a fast 5K at Mt. SAC or somewhere, then settle into the 800/1,500 type stuff to get ready for nationals and hopefully another Team USA. "

Amazing how much life changes in 4 years.
