One thing about the 3000, it used to be run more often, and it gets thebestof the steeplers, the 5k and many 1500 runners. In that regard it may be one of the most competitive of races even though it is not raced as often.

Some of the greatest in history have very good 1500 and 5000 marks. Perhaps the 3000 is their best distance.

Here are a few things to consider:

In addition to Rupp's 8:09.72 AR indoors, the fastest 2-mile ever by an American under any conditions is Matt Tegenkamp's outdoor 8:07.07.

Rupp's 3k time of 7:30.16 is equivalent to an 8:06.23 2M.

Bernard Lagat holds the US record outdoors in the 3000 outdoors of 7:29.00 (Rieti 2010) which converts to roughly 8:04.98 for 2 miles.

The indoor 2 mile world record belongs to Kenenisa Bekele who ran 8:04.35 in the UK in 2008. Outdoors, Daniel Komen ran 7:58.61 in Belgium in 1997.

That being said, the indoor and outdoor 3000 marks are superior to the 2-mile marks which makes sense given the 3000 is run more often.

Indoors, Kenenisa Bekele ran 7:24.98 for 3000 in Budapest in 1998 which converts to about 8:00.64 for two miles.

Outdoors, arguably the greatest distance world record on the books is the 7:20.67 that Komen ran for 3000 in Rieti in in 1996. 7:20.67 converts to about 7:55.98 for two miles.
