Mahoney's with the New Jersey New York Track Club, not the Oregon Track Club. He's racing.
The race is typically a 14:20ish affair and the meet as a whole is more of an IC4A qualifier than it is an NCAA qualifier. But if Mahoney entered, maybe he knew there'd be a few other guys shooting for the mid to high 13's range.

The point is that he always drops. In the NON high school 2 mile, he took the lead way too early and got smoked by Forys and Centrowitz. Jager needs to learn to leave a little more in the tank for the last 200m. The 2 mile at the Armory was awesome though. Like I said, sometimes it gets you in trouble. That issue will resolve itself as his fitness gets better and he hangs with the best until the finish line. Definitely love to watch Evan race though. It's refreshing to see someone 'go for it'.
My guess is they are going for some kind of record or why travel all the way to NYC when they can drive up to Seattle for a time trial on the oversize UW track?

So that it will count as an IAAF standard for outdoor worlds this summer. (Can't do that on oversize indoor tracks, I believe.)

I think an over sized track would count for outdoor qualifying times. It is still significantly shorter and has tighter turns than an outdoor track.

Assuming the rabbit does his job, I wouldn't be surprised to see several of these guys in the 13:1x's and perhaps the winner chasing 13:0X. I certainly think Rupp is on another level, but I also think he would be chasing 13:00 so I have to believe these guys can kill 13:20.
I wouldn't be completely shocked if the AR gets a scare but I think both Lagat and Rupp are capable of taking it under 13:00 right now. It's really too bad Rupps 5000 got scrapped, especially after seeing his 3000.
