what is the absolute LOWEST resting heartrate that a runner can have?

My sleeping heart rate when I was training hard at 43 years old was 28 bpm. My heart rate at awakening was usually 32 to 34. I just do P90X now and walk/run a few days a week and it runs around 40. As I sit here web surfing it is 44. I am 59 now.

I've had 28 come up on a holter reading while asleep. I also had 26 while on beta blockers. I was told that under 25 was a risk of V Fib so that was the end of the beta blockers and my doctor advised me to stop running.

Officially it's 27, according to the Guiness Book of World Records.

Mine used to be -3 when I was at my all-time peak.

I'm going the other way 98 bpm after 40 yrs of running which included a 4:08 mile and a 2:22 marathon......it's called atrial fibrillation and scares doctors/nurses when they don't know me and take my rate rate via machine........I tell them to relax i was a marathong runner and i ain't going nowhere.

that's the lowest i've heard of

i'd not like mine to be that low.

Where did you get that from?

I'm a runner, but not very much at the moment due to my smashed and subsequently rebuilt hip.

My resting pulse was 18 in 2014 - discovered in a routine checkup.

I now have a pacemaker!

My resting heart rate was about 36 in college when I was running seriously. A couple other guys on my team were pretty similar to that. I imagine a freak of nature who's really training could push very low 30's. I also don't think it really matters - the guy on our college team who broke all the school records had a resting heart rate ten beats higher than me.

I'm almost always in the 60s when I measure it during the day, but I mainline Diet Cokes.

A heart rate of 0 bpm wouldn't make that person much of a runner anymore, now would it?

This isn't "incorrect." Your true resting heart rate is your heart rate immediately as you are waking (assuming you weren't awakened by something startling that would increase the HR).

We only treat a person's waking but relaxed pulse as their "resting heart rate" because it's the best approximation that is practical.

Who gives a crap about resting heart rates?? My heart rate at 5:00 pace is 49.
