HS Athlete:
9:30 should be well within reach, especially if the workout was comfortable and you have solid tempo runs and mileage behind that workout.
SHAZAM:
There have been a few posts on here asking for updates, so I've been obliging. Plus, I thought the purpose of this board was to share information about running. If this board is only about trolling, calling people drug cheats, and insulting one another, clearly I'm in the wrong.
Point is this, I've got a kid that was a complete non athlete entering high school. His first ever 2 mile was just barely under 14 minutes. He has been working hard for 2.5 years now and has shown steady improvements along the way. I'm putting info out there because some athlete may see this and be inspired....Or, another coach may see this and get an idea for his own athlete.
What place did USA take in the recent world cross championship? Did I ever think I'd live to see that result? (NO). Shazaam, you sound pretty young, so listen up. When I started coaching, back in the 90s, my kids were doing 40-45mpw and other coaches and athletes looked at us like we were CRAZY, BATSH*T INSANE for doing that much mileage. It was also believed at this time, that if a kenyan showed up at any race, he would smoke the american runners. This also happened to be a time in US distance running where our high school kids were getting slower every year. It wasn't until the end of that decade, when coaches started re-discovering mileage, that our results started to improve again a little. It has been a long slow process, but our runners are getting back to the point where they are competitive on the world stage again.
Did message boards cause this turnaround? Not entirely, but they certainly helped speed the dissemination of information. So, if you don't like the fact that I'm sharing training information about an athlete that has been making huge gains, fine, don't read it. Others however, may be interested.
BTW: Since the 3200 last friday
S Off
S: 7 easy
M: 7 easy
T: 11 easy-moderate
W: 9 easy
Th: Dual Meet against a team with no distance runners. 4:56, 2:13, 10:30 (all in old school yard measurements, if that matters). 6-7 miles total.
We are heading into spring break now, so I'm going to have the kid use this period as a small block of high volume training before we jump into a period of thursday dual meets and saturday invitationals. During that time period, the races will, for the most part, serve as our quality workouts, but we will likely keep a tempo effort, followed by short reps on mondays. Total volume for this week and next week will be around 60, dropping to around 50 when we come off of spring break and start running more meets again.
