Yep, different criteria, different weighting. UCSF is a med school so it's tough to compare it with Cal Tech.

Maybe a better way to look at the quality of undergraduate institutions is to consider where the very best students go - given they can go wherever they want.

Teach-to-the-test does not produce world class researchers and government contract laboratories. The University of California system years ago stopped relying on teach-to-the-test measures like GPA, AP, SAT, ACT, IQ, etc.

A little bit of pride knowing that the college I attended back East is on the high SAT list, but I'm still a dummy despite that experience.

My master's is from CU-Boulder, and I'm not sure it is #32 as per the OP's list. My PhD university not on the list, which means I went to increasingly lousy places for my higher education goals.

Blatantly untrue. The University of California system is notorious for relying on almost nothing but GPA and SATs.

I'm an Armt brat. I moved to Cali at 18 with my parents and went to a CC. HS numbers are looked at by UC but not factored in a traditional manner. UC keeps a rolling database correlating UC graduations to specific high schools, and HS numbers, and uses that information for new freshman admissions decisions. If you are a California CC transfer to a UC with a TAG then UC uses CC GPA only. HS level numbers are wholely ignored.

I thought the California system reduced reliance on SAT scores as s response to the passage of a proposal to amend the state constitution to ban racial preferences in public school admissions.

I think from what my advisor says basically at UC schools HS scores don't factor as much as for other universities.

The Ku Klux Klan's Bakke initiative backfired. At UC, Hispanic-White, Anglo-White, Mongol-White, Semitic, and Black admissions have dropped, while Central Asian and East Asian enrollment has doubled. The KKK wanted a majority Angle White UC system like USC and Stanford has using a discriminatory numerical racial quota system. On the bright side, since Bakke, the dominance of Asian researcher have resulted in the world rankings of UC campuses zooming through the roof, US DOE/DOD contracts have increased dramatically.

I bite. MPIs are not universities, the Max Planck Foundation consists of independent research institutes, and does not award degrees. I did my Phd work at an MPI, but received my degree from a German university. My grants and publications only had the MPI's name on it, and as a result, my university has its publication record diluted.

These metrics do not give a fair comparison of European to US universities. Ecole Normale Superieur at #69 (and behind Paris-XI?) Imperial College #24? Not one IIT makes the list? Surely you're joking :)

What about the United States Military Academy. I would think this is on par with Harvard and the other Ivies. No love for West Point?
