He ran 14:50+ winning Carlsbad. He then runs sub 29 one week later finishing only 20 plus slower than Ritz?

That's amazing! Very inspirational.

Statements like this ruin the credibility of the performance. Don't exaggerate. Ritz ran nearly 2 minutes slower than his capability. So he was 20 seconds behind a jogging/out of shape Ritz. And in the 5k, I thought someone on here mentioned that he ran a 14:01 or something recently.

It'd be like a 4:15 miler thinking he's hot stuff because he beat Webb this past weekend.

And the world record pace is like right around 29 flat so I don't know what you're talking about there (unless my math is wrong). And his 28:57 is not that far from 2:10 pace... Especially when you consider that it's being run 4 times in a row.

I said congrats. It's a significant achievement, but not as impressive as some of you are making it out to be. But of course that's all subjective I guess.

WR marathon pace would be 29:17.8 for EACH 10k segment.

A 2:10:26 marathon would be 30:54.5 for EACH 10k segment.

Is something impressive only if it outdoes the greatest of all time? Most of us can appreciate how good a 28:57 is in an absolute sense, and the smart ones can appreciate that it is even better at 40.

Well, I admit my 2:10:00 comment was off. But the world record one is not. A track 28:57 and a road 29:17 are about the same. Then stringing a few more together.

His time is as impressive as any 28:57 is to me. His age doesn't make it more impressive. But that's just me. I feel like there are 40 year olds that will/can run much faster than that.

An "upper college guy" is supposed to mean a top-ranked college guy. Like top 40 or all American capability. I assume that the poster was disliking Lagat because he was a fast import. Why else would you not like the fact that Lagat is now running for the US. My point was that that is false reasoning because Lagat was no huge, fast standout when he arrived here. So he wasn't a fast import.

I think folks who know his story would be more impressed. He's a major talent regardless of age. Did a great job coming back after years off and it still trucking. Wish I could have run sub-29 on HGH, EPO, crack and speed...much less on the legs of a 40-year old.

I haven't posted in over a year and nothing has changed. To sum up the responses:

60% - This guy sucks

10% - Good job

30% - This guy is a doper

Another point that may resonate with some of the numbskulls who don't find this time impressive. We are talking about a guy who has NEVER run a time that would automatically qualify him for the US Olympic Trials in ANY event running sub 29 at age 40.

The most impressive part about the time is the fact that it isn't Tergat or Geb who ran it. It's a guy who has never been elite on the US let alone world stage.

If Lagat runs 28:30 at age 40 good for him, but it won't be as impressive because he has already been dominant on the world stage.

I'm 23 and my 10k PR is (31:24). Rock on old dudes.

I think it is an incredible time, BUT is he clean? That is my problem with his run.

IF he is clean good for him. I hope he runs even faster.

BUT it is hard to believe that someone can run that fast especially without being an elite athlete.

Did he ever broken the 28 for the 10K?

Little Eddy keeps coming to my mind when I read about this performance.

There are many new drugs in the market that are undetectable. Not that would make any difference, since there is no reliable test for HGH. And we all know that the anti doping system is just a joke. Marion Jones never tested positive for anything and she won six gold medals in the Olympics.

Prescription drugs is easy to get.

He's been progressing a little each year for several years. No major drops in time. Consistently maintained as he has aged. Looking at his physique you would pretty much know that HGH is out of the question. From several years ago. I want to say when he made the 10k at the trials.

Thanks for the info. HGH is not that difficult to know if someone is using or not. Just by looking at someone's face you can have an idea. Same thing with roids.

EPO and blood trasnfusion is another story.

A to do list for masters runners to prolong their running and hopefully still bang out good times

1: Drills and strides

2: Increase flexibility and mobility work

3: Strength training

4: Keep training hard but ensure extra recovery between hard workouts

5: Control your intake of alchohol

6: Stay away from junk food. Ensure diet is well balanced and full of nutrients.

7: Incorporate short hill sprints

8: Incorporate chiropratic treatment at least twice a month in order to keep your body running smoothly

9: Importance of threshold/tempo work at 15k/half marathon pace/marathon pace

10: Reduce amounts of junk mileage-every run should have a purpose

11: Consider reducing your weekly mileage

Example: 35 years old-100 miles a week=40 years old-70 miles a week

12: Try and stay off the roads as much as possible

13: Take inspiration from Kevin Castilles 10k

By considering these points you can maximise every opportunity to run amazing times into your 40s and 50s, instead of posting negative insinuations like most of the idiots who've taken over this thread.

i'm not an expert on drugs or kevin castille, but there doesn't seem to be any circumstantial evidence of drugs--he's maintained almost the same fitness from 2004-2007 (sub-14/sub-29 in those years). that's far from impossible--i'm actually faster than i was throughout my thirties, and guys like tony young and jim sorenson were able to stay close to their times from when they were in their 20s. up to about 2 years ago i don't think there was anything physically stopping me from approaching (not reaching or surpassing) even my mile and especially my 5k prs from the 90s. the body (and mind) is a funny thing--i remember joking with tony that his masters times showed two things: he is a freak of nature; and, he should have run faster when he was younger. castille's times may be showing the same thing.

i suppose this is when i'd get suspicious: if i run a mile/5k pr at the age of 40+ (a la rj and others), somebody test me. if castille busts a 13:30 or something, yeah, i'll be skeptical. until then, and i never thought i'd say this, i'll just look forward to october when i'm out of his age group, and april when i get hopefully another crack at him...
