Galen Rupp Has NO CHANCE At Lagat's 2 Mile AR

lagat is WAY faster than galen in the 1500 and about 100m faster than him in the 5,000. why would he have a chance at beating him in the 2 mile?

Lagat has running smarts other runners simply do not have. No offense to Rupp, but currently he is not, and may never be, as cagey a runner as Lagat is. That is nothing for Rupp to be ashamed about.

There is the matter that Rupp is about 26 and Lagat is about 37. Rupp vs Lagat these days is almost like Jim Courier vs Jimmy Connors in the 1991 US Open.

Age doesn't matter. No Kenyan 5000 runner beat him last year either.

Over the last 2 years, Rupp has run 7:42, 7:43, and 7:54; and just ran 3:57. Those times are consistent with ~8:20 or worse, not sub-8:10.

Lagat tested positive. El Guerrouj comes from a drug culture. His own training partner tested positive for EPO. Galen has had steady improvement every year since high school. So no.

And 8:15 is easy for Galen. Teg ran 8 seconds faster, and Ritz, who has a slower 800, mile, 5k, and 10k PB than Rupp ran 8:11. How Jesse thinks 8:15 is out of his reach is beyond me.

True but he is coached by Albalco Salazar. Michael "springe" Johnson is his manager I believe. Why implicate other people and not Rupp? Rupp is just as suspicious as anyone else on the top. well, he just ran 3:57 to out-kick mo farah, he's averaged 63's for 5000m pace in the past (this last summer), and he probably has more strength now than this time last year (when he ran 13:11i? also 63's) so if he could run 62's, that would be somewhere around 8:16-8:20 2-mile pace. II guess he would have to average under 62 to have a chance. that's maybe 3 seconds slower than his mile pace right now?

Can't we all just agree on how much we want Rupp to run faster than 8:15?

What I do know though is Rupps training is going very well , his coach has him on track for his seasons goals and understand his limits , Rupp is an athlete at the top of his game at the moment and can cruise 8:15 without having to peak or over rest. Lagat has nothing to do with his running the two miles.

The effort has nothing to do with "balls" , its about him being fit and ready and achieving a milestone in his buildup for outdoors.

Nobody ever said he had a chance of beating Lagat. We are talking about one of Lagat's TIMES, not the man himself. Rupp has already broken some of Lagat's indoors times, hence why Lagat is trying to take back his indoor 5k record. If Rupp went out and ran a 3mile pr in 15mins, we wouldn't be saying, oh Rupp can't beat that, It's Lagat's pr, and he can't beat Lagat. A pr is only as good as the effort the person put in.

HUGE difference

Lagat has had the ability to be much faster at the 2mile/5k indoors, he just hasn't done it. He's taken a few cracks the past few years, basically jogging then kicking it in lowering his times. Lagat at his best was just a shy slower than El G in the 1500, and probably could have been low 12:40's in the 5k as well. Not sure how many remember him closing in 51.9 while running 12:59 beating Bekele. That pace was an absolute joke for him when he was fit.

Rupp is going for a time, forget the person who's time it is. That's not very relevant. I think he has a better shot at beating his time, then beating Lagat head to head in a 2mile.

Kudos for writing such a great comment. I wish I had it in me to write like this too. I will use this to help me make better comments in the future.

It's very right that this has nothing to do with balls, it's not the runner with biggest balls who wins races but the one who is most fit. I've failed to understand this until I read your comment. Thanks again.

Actually, science doesn't lie. If my PR is 8:59 and just because I "have the balls" doesn't mean I can suddenly run 8:15. These are professional runners. They all have "the ball's" so yeah, it does come down to who is more fit at the time.

You've never understood distance or middle distance going back to your days on Dyestat, so you have zero credibility to tell someone he is "uneducated." Webb has ZERO encouraging results under this new Vig regime, so we will just see what transpires this year. In the opinion of many runners and coaches, Webb should NOT be concentrating on 600 TTs in early February as a miler. But lets see if he surprises us.
