So, you've had the wind slam a door closed before, and you had the window open on this occasion, and yet the mere fact that this occurrence seemed a little different to you is enough for you to conclude that paranormal activity is the only explanation? Nothing in your description eliminates air movement as a root cause. What makes you think this wasn't a remarkably fast and aggressive example of the wind slamming a door closed. Also keep in mind that you are, in this case, relying on an imperfect memory that has been influenced by the uneasiness you felt.

On the physical end of things, it takes very, very little pressure differential across a door to make it move quickly. There are literally countless factors to consider in analyzing the fluid dynamics involved with a door slamming shut in the wind. Everything has an effect: the shape of the house, the direction of the wind, the height of the door, the height of the ceiling, which windows are open... The weight of the door has surprisingly little to do with it.

Touching the door and checking things out for a while does not make it a thorough investigation.

I'm a bit confused as to how you can assert that atheists believe science is infallible.

I'm not sure how you can lump atheists together in a group in any manner except for a disbelief in a god-figure.

For you to assert that agnostics think science is fallible while atheists think to the contrary is slightly ridiculous.

I find that many atheists (myself included) readily acknowledge how science is forever evolving in light of new discoveries and actually use that fact to discuss why it is significantly better than maintaining an archaic belief system (e.g., the biblical literalists of Christianity) that must dismiss any science that does not fall in line with what their belief says is true.

I like how the very rules of the scientific method prevent leaps of intuition, yet without those very leaps science would forever stagnate. It's a little contradictory when the only real way you can move forward in that system is to break its only real rule, which is to only utilise logic.

Thank you for your post and I respect your view. We are probably close in beliefs. What keeps me from labeling myself an atheist is that I just do not think I or any human at this point in history is qualified to make the assertion that there are no forces that transcend the visible physical world.

Even placing "odds" on whether there are such forces exist (as Dawkins and his legions do) is completely arbitrary and presumptuous. The very definition of these forces is that they exist outside of our 4 dimensions; so we might never be able to see them or prove that they exist. But that does not mean they don't.

Maybe there are 11 dimensions (as predicted by M string theory)?

When I was a kid my mom would put me down for a nap in their room during the day. I vividly remember the door violently slamming shut many times. So loud, sometimes, that it would wake me up. It scared the crap out of me and I hated taking naps in their room. Since it was Summer my mom would often leave a window open in the room and I've since come to the conclusion that it was the open window that caused the door to close and not something paranormal.

I respect what you're saying, but Im not going to waste my time attempting to accurately portray the environment in which this occurred. You decided to purposefully omit part of my description in your own formation of a rebuttal as well. So, it might be partially my fault not explaining everything accurately, but part of the problem is the fact that your mind is made up already.

Let me make this clear. There was NO WIND outside. Also, I too have experienced the phenomenon in which you are describing with the pressure differential in many different rooms of different houses, and I am trying to explain to you that this was nothing like said phenomenon.

With this said, I probably won't check this thread anymore because I have stated my experience, and you chose to not believe it. Cool. No one else cares.

I find that I often fall more into the 'anti-theist' camp first and foremost and atheism in and of itself doesn't influence my daily life at all (and how would it? It'd be like a-unicornism impacting my daily life).

I am almost incensed by the notion that there are people that 100% buy into the Christian god or the Muslim god or the Hindi gods, etc., sometimes with the notion that worshiping any god but their own will result in eternal death, lake of fire, etc., etc.

As for the notion that 'forces' could somehow shape our existence, I'll admit that's too much of a stretch for me. If I had to choose between some unknown multi-dimensional force and one of the gods obviously invented by man, though, I would choose the former.

Indeed, it still does.

Now as far as the "internet armchair atheist", I am not really sure what you mean by this. As far as my own chairs and beliefs, you know nothing of these and surely fell far from the truth. Now, if you have even the slightest respect for truth, or if you even understand the concept, you should be feeling rather stupid right about now.

All because I think it funny that you do not understand the difference between "there" and "their". Very impressive indeed. Perhaps I do believe in science. But the fact that you deduced this from essentially nothing at all leaves me thinking that you must have god-like powers.

Now please child, go sit down and relax before you hurt yourself. And maybe try this in the future - try not to make any completely unsupported assumptions about others. You know, that would be the way that science would suggest that you approach it. God too. (Not sure what ghosts would recommend).

I believe in the Ghost of Ashenfelter. He passed me at about the mile mark of the 2006 National Masters Cross Country Championships. He had eerily smooth form--it almost looked like he was floating.

I've picked up 7 instances of paranormal activity since the beginning of this message board on my EMF detector.

Guys, obviously ghosts exist. Haven't you all seen ghost adventures?
