Last month I decided to experiment with running not only every day but two runs daily.
My background is that I'm a 39 year old average recreational runner who typically ran 25-40 miles/week over 4 or 5 running days, occasionally running 50-60 /week when training for a marathon. ~38 minute 10K pr, 3:15 marathon pr.
My secondary run is done either in the morning or evening depending on how I feel. I usually will decide about 10 minutes into the run which it's gonna be. This run has been no more than 3 miles and as little as 1/2 mile depending on what I feel like, but the important thing is I just get out there and do it every day. The primary run is my workout. Sometimes it's repeats, a tempo run, or just putting in mid-paced miles, again mostly depending on what I feel like but I do a speed workout weekly with my club so that is always set.
This has been working very well, and in fact putting in 40 miles/week this way feels like 30 the way I used to do it. It's so much easier to run more mileage, without any noticeable extra fatigue. I feel my Achilles tendon issues getting better as well. I think the more consistent and frequent stimulus is good for them. I no longer feel any achilles stiffness in the morning and this is great after almost a year of dreading getting out of bed because they hurt. I feel faster too and the running feels almost effortless sometimes now. This is great.
Gonna start doing 2 to 3 doubles a week soon.
