Pretty awesome field, with the excpetion of Farah and Jelian. This race will have pacers and you can bet Rupp will trying to take AR from Solinsky. C) Bett and Tanui have run 26:50ish recently, Kipchoge is certainly capable of it, Kirui and Rupp are probably capable of 27 plus or minus a few seconds under ideal conditions (see A and B), and who knows what Bekele might do.

D) If Rupp wants the AR, and I think he's more concerned about time than a tactical placing this meet, he'll be willing to go to the front and drive the pace if it lags as he did when Solinski got the record.

Good post and I agree - Solinsky's national record was paced for the most part by Rupp, and one can only assume his is in much better condition at this point in time

Solinsky, enjoy the last couple of days as American record holder!

Great point. If Rupp is feeling good and they want to go for it they very well may have arranged for someone to do pacework. I wouldn't be too surprised though if they are just wanting to get him into a race and see how it unfolds without a pace goal. That to me actually has more value in terms of preparing for the olympics next year, even though I'd like to see Rupp go under 27:00 and push the AR forward.

He got that experience at worlds this year, now he needs a legit fast race to give him the confidence that he can kick with the 26high guys. Really, without a fast race this season could equally well be looked at as his best ever and a total bust. He set a minor 5k pr, but that was in a time-wise poor race, his main shot to really do something objectively great, at Monaco, was derailed by Merga's a$$holery, and he got dusted in the kick in the 10 and the 5 at worlds. A legit good race would be nice.

Except merga did not push rupp to the ground. Rupp got clumpsy and fell into a another kenyan guy. I saw the race.

There's really no reason Rupp would enter the race just to run 27:10 or slower again. He wants the AR to cap off his season. Assuming he has some pacers for part of the race, I say he does it, barely.

Rupp wishes he were Kenyan. No doubt about it. He would be faster, better, stronger, and less prone to falling and not finishing.

There would be if he needs the experience and confidence of running with and finishing with the top guys in an unpredictable and uneven race, which the olympics will surely be.

Either way it should be a treat. It is not about a time and he's in it to win it so to speak or it turns out to be a time chaser and the AR is under threat of being lowered.

Anyone else notice that this is eerily similar to the race where Ritz broke the 5k AR? Basically all africans and one white guy (don't think the norwegian, frenchman, and japanese guy will factor in at all), Bekele in the race, fairly little publicity?
