Hats off to Crossfit: They seem to generate a lot of excitement for a 5k, and even put up some serious prize money. Sure, it's all a marketing gig, but there's hardly a race with that amount of money which isn't. Just don't think they'll be disappointed if a bunch of runners win it in sub 14 - the whole "we beat you at your own game" message is a joke to generate publicity, and the people at crossfit are very well aware of it.

Talked to a couple of people at the race and got a little info.
On the men's side I know that "some white guy" won - maybe Jankowski or Fam - with Rebuen Mwei of Kenya second.
One the women's side, Risper Gesabwa, a Mexico-based Kenyan won, and Janet Cherobon-Bawcom got 2nd and PR'd.
Janet had to head straight to the airport to catch her flight to Chiba, so didn't get any other details.
times??? don't tell me i'm kicking myself for not going!!!
Sorry, didn't get any info on guys times. I spoke with Reuben and he said that the wind was brutal and that he felt like he'd run a half marathon. Janet told me that Jankowski, Fam, and "some adidas guys" were there along with a handful of Kenyans.
knew i should have run....ah well, i can get my butt kicked tomorrow, better than flying across the country to do it :)
jankowski won...still waiting for them to post results...crazy that janet cherobon-bawcom got beat...Risper Gesabwa had to be pretty confident of a top two finish to fly all the way in from mexico on her own dime...
14:11 won it in a sprint finish with second place only 2 tenths of a second back. 14:20ish took 3rd.
Fam ran in a sweatshirt, felt like crap and gave up and ran 14:40
It was also a very windy day out there... Winners could have been just under 14 if the wind wasn't so bad
Congrats Zapsters on your payday! Way to go Jankowski and Alissa in 3rd!
so how FAST was the top Crossfitter? 19:17? 20:31? 24:42? SEVENTEEN FIFTY ONE?????????
let the suspicion begin...
a. a kenyan training in mexico
b. big money race with no drug testing
c. she ran around 15:55 and made it look easy
d. it was windy
e. she is a good runner but come on...she is training in mexico!
even though i think cross-fitters are a unique breed, i gotta give them props for putting on a good race! the problem is that they did not seem to advertise it well, or for whatever reason no one showed up. there was maybe 300 people max. they put up some serious money, held it in an expensive venue, and probably lost a lot of money. i would be surprised if they do it next year.
on the men's side, jankowski almost lost it! he had about 2 meters on the other guy and seemed to think he had it won, the other guy put in a late kick to pass him. fortunately jankowski realized it and also picked it up just enough to hold him off...never forget to race THROUGH the line especially when there is $6000 on the line and a money hungry african on your heels.
I always assumed that Risper is a local. She's run in several Atlanta area races this year.
