I would say they are very close, but I will choose the 3k becasue Komen was definitely capable of running a faster 5K in 1996. In 1997 when Komen ran 12:39, he had raced hard about 3-4 times in a 2 week period coming into that 5K and was barely training from what I was told. The passage of time counts.

Btw, El'G, Geb, KB and others have always discounted their attempts at the Komen's 3K record becasue after one hard try becasue that record made them realize the limit of their capability. Btw, who ever gets that record is going to be 1500/5K type as opposed to 5k/10k type becasue as a start, you need to be capable of a sub-3:30 1500.

Someone said the 10K record is the softest of the 3, I actually think it is the 5K record. It is incredibe how fast guys were running in the late 90s.

I think Mo has as good a chance as anyone at getting close to the 3K, pehaps about 7:24, but that's it. As far as the 5K and 10K is concerned, I have not seen anything to suggest he could get close to either of those records. There is a lot of money to be gained from simply announcing a world record attempt, which KB use to do all of the time. If Mo and AlSal thought he could set a WR, he would...big dogs don't like to leave food on the table. I don't even think Mo even trains for running records, from what I know, he trains for the types of races he races.

Although, I don't have all of the dots connected yet, but I think there might be an attempt at a fast 10K in Birmingham in Aug by Rupp and Mo. I don't suspect it will be a world record attempt, but for your resume or legacy you still want to be somewhere on the top-10 list.

I truly believe the only other runner who ever could have ran it was El Guerrouj. MAYBE (and a big maybe) Bekele if he trained specifically for it. Guerrouj could've done it if he raced it as often as he did the 1500.

The diamond league needs to have like 5 3k races and then give anyone who breaks the record..double win points and crowned king of the distance running universe. komen's record is almost 20 years old!

Just because KB couldn't run 7:20 doesn't make the 3k record better, it just means it's a record that's out of his range.

I really wanna see Bekele tale the marathon WR. If he did so, I think he'd be right up there with the best ever. Imagine how hard it'd be to have the 5/10/marathon WRs in this day and age.

Bekele did train for it in 2007. That´s why he almost lost the 10000 in the WC.

His record is even more impressive when you look at the schedule he ran leading up to it:

8/10 in Monaco, 3000m 7:25.16

8/14 in Zurich, 5000m 12:45.09

8/16 in Cologne, 1500m 3:34.17

8/23 in Brussels, 3000m 7:25.87

8/30 in Berlin, 5000m 13:02.62

9/1 in Rieti, 3000m 7:20.67

6 guys have gone under 7:26. Komen did it 3 times in 3 weeks, with the 8th fastest 5000m ever thrown in for good measure.

Dude absolutely would've been the GOAT if he didn't start partying instead of training. And if he was on the sauce, everybody else who has taken a crack at that record was too, and they still didn't come close.

It seems clear what was going on from 1993 until the blood passport came in

Epo was a major factor in these performances which can no longer be matched

I tend to put the 10K 1st and if the other distances had times equal to that 10k, they would be sub-1:40 800, 3:23.2 1500, sub 3:40 mile, sub-7:50 2mile, 12:36.7 5k, sub-58 half marathon and just over 2:01 for the marathon, but you can't compare road times to track times because of running surfaces

Hmm...I had never heard of this before. He trained for the 3,000M? Why? Not saying you're wrong; just curious.

I've never heard anyone compare 26:17 to any of those times. What basis are you using? 3:23 and 1:39 both seem way too fast in comparison to 26:17.

The one out there that might have the talent to match Komen is Asbel Kiprop; world junior cross country champ, 1:43.15, 3:27.72, one Olympic title, two World Championship titles.

Until last year it looked like he didn't have a record breaker's mentality, but then he started his declared push towards a 1500m world record and he seems to be making a decent fist of it. If he gets it, maybe he'll decide to do an El G and move up.

Hmm...I knew that Asbel was a 3:27 man, but I had no clue he ran 1:43-low, which is sick. Especially if he didn't compete the 800 often.

I'd love to see him get some records. If he has 1:43 speed and 3:27 endurance, maybe he can break Ngeny's "ancient" 1K WR.

He ran 3:47/48 at Pre, right? That's close to Komen's 3:46, plus he has the faster 15. What a talent. I didn't know he was a WJR XC champ either. What range.

Just reviewed this. The 3K is the best WR out there, even if it isn't commonly run.

The two best men over 5000m and 10000m in world history couldn't come within 4 seconds of it, while over a longer distance Komen is only 3 seconds off KB's 5000m record.

The best man over 1500m (El G), a 1500m gold medalist (Morceli) and a very good 1500m doper (Saidi-Sief) couldn't come within 2 seconds. El G was within record pace by 2 seconds at 2K, he just didn't have the mental strength Komen had to hold it all by himself.

Also, the last real attempt at the record was 15 years ago now.

He is right a 26:17 10km is equal to a 3:21 1500m a 7:15 3k and 2:02:17 marathon and a 57:xx half according to a race time predictor
