Um, in case you aren't aware, she won the USA XC Championships today. So I think she's doing just fine. And so is Ryan Hall, although he could be doing better.

I was at US Cross Championships today. Anyone who beats Molly Huddle should not be thinking about retiring. Sara ran very tough at the end. Huddle closed a ~25m gap on coming into the final ~300m, to pull slightly ahead, but Sara responded and outleaned her for the win.

Some people keep running even after they know they can't be a world class runner, just like some people play basketball even when they'll never be in the NBA. Why not compete to the best of your ability if you like running and you're that good?

And whats your point? What is the reality she has to accept? If you cant be the at a certain level in competing, as obviously defined by you, then accept reality and question why you are competing or stop competing all together. If this is the case, then most competitors in track and field should stop and retire immediatley.
OP in 2/11 said Ryan was on the decline, then he dropped a 2:04 in Boston. So, OP's got a lot of cred.
Why do you run? Why do you show up to local 5k's and compete?
Maybe because you like the thrill and joy you get from running and competing.
Sara Hall might not be the best in the US but she can still run because she wants to. If she wins and places second here an there, well, it is like getting a win at a local race with prize money. Except her checks are slightly bigger.
She is having fun and banking on it.
