Sevene served as more of a person to bounce ideas off of. John Babington served much the same role. Babington conducted many a track workout for Joan in Cambridge.

The truth is that Joan was essentially self coached because she trained how she felt and any coach would have had trouble keeping her on any sort of program or schedule. She trained the way she felt and that intuitive process was not set up for the tradiitional coach/athlete relationship. Witness her latest move of running Chicago and then running Tufts the next day. No coach would advise that sort of thing but that's how Joan did things her entire career. Bull headed would be a nice way of describing her approach to her own running. Worked for her.

I saw a flaw in Ryan Hall's makeup some time ago, when we was still racing the 1500 and mile. Its always something, his college scholarship a 3 year waste of money, picking and choosing races, etc. In track, and I saw him all the time, I cannot remember a single time when he was seriously challenged at a really, really fast pace that he responded to the challenge and won the race. He had to move up to the 'thon because its where he could find that cool breeze in the land of God.

He is on a solo trip of existentialism. A very, very talented trip of existentialism.

Not by our professors. A little healthy skepticism combined with some logic and reason inevitably lead us to similar conclusions. some pretty arrogant comments here, I don't know where people get the idea that Hall isn't smart from... just because he doesn't crap on about vdot in a press conference doesn't mean he doesn't know how to get himself running fast.

If you don't believe in the program, it won't work for you. Simple as that.

At the moment the only program Hall has confidence in is his. That could change in 2-3months. Let him have a chance.

If you would refer to the original post, the poster stated that he wasn't a person to regularly pray, but that he would go out of his way to say one in this case.

I don't get why everyone keeps acting like Ryan Hall has been running sub-par with regularity. He may not have popped an amazing race of late, but he's consistently been running fast times and finishing somewhat near the front. In some ways, he is Mr. Consistency. It's damn competitive out there and to beat the guy up for not bagging a major win is unreasonable.

With regard to his recent antics, I say bravo to him. He was obviously not happy with his current situation and is giving something else a go. Maybe it will work wonders for him, maybe not. It's easy to mock his religiosity, but that's how he thinks and how he generates inspiration.

Why would ASICS have a problem? everyone talks about Hall, just look at this thread, that is publicity.

No different than when Webb was runnning like crap - the only difference is that NIKE interfered and made Webb move from Virginia to train under Salazar, maybe that had something to do with Phil and Alberto's relationship.

Who would ASICS send Hall to?

The thing that is really sad about Ryan Hall is that he reminds us of our own failures. Ryan is the best we have and if he can't win a major race how will we? His failures hit a chord with our internal ego, and it is devestating.

Everytime I see him race I have flashbacks to my own races, my own dissapointments. Failures like PRing by 20 seconds in the 5k and still getting blasted in the last lap by some kid from Eldorett or any other time we compete to the max of our ability and still get manhandled. Ryan is far more talented than me and watching him fail is the most devestating thing to ever happen to my running psych. Everytime he loses we wonder why we run. This supertalent, this Highschool and NCAA all star who blows the rest of us away at the trials and has every advantage an American can have is easily put away by some hut dwelling corn eating teen from Iten.

So to you who wonder why we are obsessed with Ryan Hall, maybe you should wonder why you aren't. He symbolizes the best any of us can do at this point.

If this were another runner, I might be psyched...

in the 70's and 80's we had guys just busting their balls to be a great runner..may worked shitty jobs and ran 120mpw, driving to races/sharing rooms and earning some prize money along the way....

now we have people who choose not to work anything additional, complain about the lack of support and struggle to put in the time ....

The reason we don't have loads of people running 2:19 or faster to reach the standard is lack of effort. There are more kids running XC/Track now in HS who run faster today then in the past, but they go to college, graduate and when some company isn't offering them 6 figures to run for them as a 14min 5k runner they bail ....feeling entitled to what needs to be earned

- We do. We also got a 2:06 marathoner and a helluva lot more sub-2:10's this decade.

Brian Sell worked at Home Depot running 150 per week and I knew guys doing 170 on pennies in the past decade.
