I ended up predicting 5th for him in the contest, and he got 8th. Not bad! Many say both he and Derrick were "team running," so it's hard to say if they would have been with/ahead of Puskedra had they gone all out. All these guys have an excellent base of fitness under their belts, so there should be some exciting races from all of 'em come spring.

Derrick is a 5k/10k guy who ran 13:55 in HS. He should win everything over 5k. The 5k is close. Derrick has won, German is faster. They have yet to compete at the 5k in college when they were both at their best.

German beat Derrick at World Junior XC and got 11th. The was most definitely not a fun run-- more like one of the toughest races in the world, even at the junior level.

Not necessarily. Derrick and Riley ran the last 2k faster than anybody else which shows that Derrick definitely had a lot left in the tank.

secondly, as they get further into their careers ncaa xc becomes less important till it doesn't mean crap. German is more accomplished and has more upside in the 1500, 3000, 5000. The races elite runners make a living off of.
But you're an idiot who doesn't understand that. You probably think Derrick is a bigger talent than Wheating because Wheating never came close to Derrick in XC.
I wish them both well, but sharper minds will realize that Derrick needs to make unheard of improvements if he wants to even make a US national team in the 10,000. Fernandez, on the other hand, has to make incrimental improvements in the 1500 and he as on the plane to London. But who knows, maybe derrick might sniff an NCAA title some day. You gotta start somewhere.

Unheard of improvements? So you're saying all of the guys who have ever made a US National Team at 10,000 started from farther ahead than where he is now? That all were better as Juniors? I'd say the competition's tough, and nothing's guaranteed, but he fits in nicely along the path of guys who have developed into consistent top Americans.
He might go the way of Ritz, Solinsky and Hall, or he might go the way of Don Sage and Louis Luchini. Or maybe somewhere in between like Jorge Torres and Jon Riley. But to say that improvement is unheard of is silly. It's actually pretty common for guys at his level.
