Dave Moorcroft needs to be in the discussion. 13:00 5K world record (no pacers) which held for 2 plus years. Also, a sub 3:50 miler, I believe. Dude had mad talent. Put him in today's field, with the advances in nutrition, drills, flexibility training, etc. and he's a sub 12:50 guy for sure.

The Byzantine *greek* empire was alive and healthy in 900-1100 AD, no thanks to Islam which was always trying to conquer it, Islam did far more to kill classical scholarship than they ever did to preserve it.

Still no...as people have pointed out fastest does not mean the best. Viren is most likely the best, while Zatopek and others (Herb Elliot, Shorter, Snell, etc) are not far behind. It is hard to even say that Solinsky is the best American...clearly the fastest on the track, but not the best just yet.
