Could he qualify with a half marathon time?
Could he qualify with a half marathon time?
It's funny how much letsrunners love to talk about Dean Karnazes. And they always seem to know everything about him. Like right now, I find myself in this thread trying to learn more about him as if drawn by a magnetic force. Please stop wasting my time with these threads, as I cannot help myself. That is the beauty of it.

10/10. This is one of the best troll threads in a while. You even made the front page.
Excellent trolling. It takes a subject of ridicule and contempt in the eyes of many letsrunners (faster runners who never get the recognition that Dean does).
Then it adds a subject of almost religious significance... on some websites the holly grail might be a boston qualifying time, but on letsrun it's qualifying for the Olympic trials.
Then it combines the two.
I concur, 10/10. Especially elegant as the OP didn't have to post again
Remember when Flojo stated that she was making a comeback not in the sprints, but to make the Olympic team in the Marathon?
Dean K is like stuck with match.com. They are both great. Yes thats right I am stuck posting under this name.
To be fair this really happened. I was in LA on a business trip and I had some free time last weekend. Somebody from one of the local running stores in my hometown told me about a low key speech that Dean was going to. I caught the tail end of the speech since my training ran late. I knew if I posted under my actual name this would never fly. But this really did happen and was by no means a trolling effort.

No.

Nasty!
There seems to be a lot of objections to giving praise, honors and recognition to a mediocre, slick, publicity-seeking media-darling. Dean should run for president. He could be the next Barack Obama!
Joe,
My opinion some of the people who make ridiculous assertions and predictions:
The problem with people with no credentials, but who have assembled an audience and then make absurd claims,is not having aspirations, it is that they are lying.
They know they have no intention of putting in the type of effort to make such a jump.
They know they have no such evidence of talent or history to believe such a silly claim.
They know that if they float out a statement amongst the assembled mass of blind lemmings that there are those that will believe it, spread it, morph it, and before you know it there will be people who believe that the person who made such a ridiculous claim actually has accomplished at that level.
They are liars, mentally ill, or just horrendously mistaken.
On to Dean,
Do I care about this cat taking money from the masses? Not really. (actually, if he attracts people to the sport legitimately I am all for him)
Do I care that he may be completely blind to the reality of competitive racing and that he may have insulted the accomplishments of conventional racers? Yes.
If this dude wanted to be part of the conventional foot-racing world he would tell his masses that he has been behind the curtain, back stage, and that he understands how difficult it is to accomplish at a high level in the conventional world of foot racing.
Our sport needs more knowledgeable fans and supporters. Dean could go a long way in educating runners and fans of the sport.
There are not a lot of clean 48 year old men capable of sub 2:30 marathons; WAG:less than 50 Americans.
Dean ain't one of them.

No.
Really? It was a goofy stunt that made the rounds of the internet running boards and the tandf list at that time.

I don't think he's got a snowball's chance of making the cut, but I could see him doing a series of races in the attempt to do it. Each one would get some publicity, and in the end the ultimate success or failure would really point out it's not so easy. If some comparisons are made to running 100K at 6:30 pace and 26.2 at 5 all the better.
DK is a walking "human interest" story and that's what gets the coverage. The sport could use a few more "personalities" that draw the press like magnets. Sure, some of them can be obnoxious but it beats the hell out of no coverage. That's one of the reasons I used to get politicians to start races I was directing. You get the mayor to fire the gun odds are the TV or print media will show up and take a picture. They might even stick around long enough to give you a couple column inches and mention the winner.
She said that she was going to run a marathon, nothing was said about making the Olympics or even the trials.
Wrong.
''A lot of people will laugh about this, but you don't laugh at Florence Griffith Joyner,'' he said. ''If she comes back, it's going to be the marathon. I really believe that. And if she does it in 1991, she says she'll go for the Olympic team in 1992. She thinks she can run 2:18.''
You saw who was #4 and still took that poll seriously?

End of thread
He is the Atkins diet of running.
My guess is he doesn't even hit 30k in 2:19 and then makes an excuse for what happened.

I think he could peak at 40k in 2:19
