I continue to be surprised each time this subject comes up on this message board. So few citizens of the United States understand our constitution and its amendments. In addition, many use the term American when they are talking about the United States. Canada is a part of America also.
I doubt that there have been changes since my running days At that time there were American Records and United States National Records. In fact in 1962, Bruce Kidd, my training partner broke the American record for 5,000 meters. Since he was a Canadian, he could not hold the US national record. Bob Schul broke that American Record in 1964.
I was born and raised in Canada in the 1930s. In 1964, I applied to immigrate to the United States. I was contacted by the US Consul in Toronto and informed that they thought that I had claim to United States Citizenship since one of my parents was a Citizen of the United States at the time that I was born. When I went in to the US Consulate, I swore under oath that I did not know that I had claim to Citizenship. I was given a US Passport and yet I had never lived in the United States. I was told that to keep my citizenship I would have to remain in the United States for 5 years.
In addition, there is an amendment to the United States Constitutioin that states that anyone born in another country of one citizen of another country and one United States Citizen is natural born and may run for President of the United States.
