Has Rupp spoken about the race

This one has both Chris's and Galens.

I think this summarizes the race pretty well. Galen does not offer excuses and in fact dismisses that the hubbub about where to race added no anxiety. That's hard to believe, not only not know which state your going to be racing in, but which day.....even possibly the day of your race?!

Solinsky states that his group benefitted from not having to worry about anything and that all the focus was on Rupp. He also attributes his big finish to the adrenaline that shot up after his stitch went away.

Both very classy and respectful interviews I thought.

Agreed. I will fully admit to liking Solinsky a lot more than Rupp and was really happy he beat him but it is an awesome thing that Rupp ran as fast as he did. Rupp's interview came off really well too. He said something interesting when asked about taking the lead, something to the effect of only god knows if someone else would have taken the lead if he didn't but he was the one there to go after the record so he acknowledged it had to be him to do it.

I totally believe Galen that the pre race issues were no big deal. Any one who knows anything about competing should know that races are won in training or practice. Once the training is done and "the hay is in the barn" as Bill Bowerman used to say, then its just a matter of showing up and running the race.

The thing I find most telling about folks on this forum..

Last year most every race had folks bashing Galen for sitting back and kicking for the win, and these were races where it made complete sense (NCAA's doubling), qualifying for WC etc.

In this race we had Solinsky sit back, reap the benefit of the nice pace setting and then kick for the win and not one negative comment was said about that. Don't get me wrong, I see nothing wrong with how either of them raced, but I can't help but think if the roles were reversed the lame ass crew of Rupp bashers would be going on about what a pussy Ruppy was to not share the work.

There is a difference between sitting back and kicking for the win from 50m and taking the lead at 900 meters.

um, many of Rupp's moves were much further than 50 m out, trying to remember but wasn't his move at the trials from 400-600m? NCAAs was no where near a 50m kick.

Really beside the point though... Unless now there is a rule about how long a kick should be.

Just goes to show the bias on the boards.

All in all though I read these boards more for amusement so no worries :)

Solinsky looked so strong I doubt it made any difference in the outcome, but I have a hard time believing that the uncertainty about the race time and venue had no effect on Rupp, or on the two Kenyan pacersetters who got jerked around as well. Bowerman may be right about fitness, but there is a mental side to racing as well and there was too much thinking going on pre-race. Looking forward to seeing how both of these guys do this summer.
