What are some of the biggest running myths?

- Elite runners intentionally take walking breaks in the marathon.

- Runner's World is the greatest source of information for any runner.

Homeostasis - You eat less (trying to control the calories in) and you body reacts by slowing down (less calories out) - even if you are exercising more. The myth is how much we actually can control the calories out part. So yes, common sense and a naive application of physics says that if you eat less, you'll lose weight; but the non-linear, complex nature of our bodies dictate that over a broad range of calories in (and calories out even) our weight will remain constant.

That's bs. Two quick reasons why:

1. Overweight individuals typically keep gaining weight throughout their life. This would not be the case if homeostasis applied to body weight.

2. Regular exercise has been shown to somewhat increase, and certainly not decrease, the basal metabolic rate.

And for what it's worth ... is it just coincidence that "Fat guy's" view of weight gain/loss basically absolves fat people of any responsibility for being obese? It's not their fault, exercise and eating less won't help, so hallelujah for homeostasis and pass the french fries.

None of those myths are even remotely "big."

1) If you look a little more closely at a actual case studies they follow a pattern similar (though in generally an opposite direction) to those who train/exercise - long plateaus followed by seemingly sudden jumps in weight. This is the effect of a constant stress (over-eating) over a long period. In contrast someone like Kobayashi (eating contest champion), over-eats a few times a year and has minimal weight gain. A few binges do not equal instant weight gain (so what happens to calories-in in that case?)

2) My point exactly, "regular exercise" is a long term stress that will push you out of homeostasis.

3)Obviously I'm a fat guy or why else would I post with this name? And I don't see where I'm blaming or not blaming - maybe you have "food issues"?

Homeostasis simply describes the situation - why is it so hard to move from one plateau to the next - it takes lot of stress (= hard work) over a long period of time to move off the plateau.

The body produces energy ... the drinks supply calories and maybe some sort of stimulant.

Endurance in the sport equates to endurance in the bedroom

we're all just joggers, and some are faster than others at the annual town road race

***attention all non competitive runners, we run to get faster, not necessarily because we love running 100 miles a week. but we're glad we do***
