I agree with the majority of sane people on here. Sanchez might have run 7:30 in a perfect world with perfect pacemaking (which of course doesn't exist anyway). That means he can run 7:30 now and if he were to run the same race outdoors on that same day his time would have been almost the same. More likely slower if there was some wind.
There is NO conversion to work out what a 7:32 indoors in Feb is worth outdoors in August. That is an impossible thing to do. Just because someone can pluck a few names from a few specific seasons and show that they improved by 5 secs is meaningless. It might show a trend for those specific athletes, but every athlete has a specific game plan for a season. While some want to be in great form to make a bit of money on the indoor circuit in Feb/March, others will just use it as a stepping stone to gauge how their winter preparation is going.
I think some of the posters are missing my point, its not so much that he improved drastically its the amount of time he did it in. He went from a 3:39/13:21 man to 4:52 (2000m)/7:32.41 (3000m) in LESS THAN 4 months. Come on now guys you know enough about running to know it takes MORE time than that to build you endurance significantly.
He's last track race was in August, he had 3 medicore x-country races in Nov and BAM January he's a candidate for making All-Time list in whatever he runs so far indoors!

The guy trained and trained seriously as you don't run as many track races as he did and not have some type of scheduled and systematic training.
He ran NUMEROUS track 1500m and 3000m races every year for the last 7-8 years and never showed a big drop in any particular event with his focus on 1500m (3:39.79) up to 2006.
2007 he ventured to 3000/5000m and ran plenty of races with no big drop where his pb up until 2009 was 13:21

in 2006 his final serious attempt at the distance, he ran ELEVEN 1500m races (4 indoors/ 7 outdoors) with a best of 3:41.73 and you think he didn't train but raced alot ROFLMAO. The guy wouldn't race that much if he hadn't been seriously training, think about it.

What you fail to understand is that just because one races does not mean that they are training optimally or to their fullest potential. It doesn't mean they're optimizing recovery. It doesn't mean that they're are in a perfect state mentally. It's also part of the reason that WRs will always continue to be broken. But yes, if that's justification enough for you to declare him dirty and Ritzenhein clean (again I don't think Ritz is clean, but really... 38 seconds off a 5000m in three months...?) then by all means keep feeding your insecurities.

Dude he was training and running all those races for 7 or eight years and never showed any kind of world stage talent. Now that he's training "like a Kenyan" in just four months he manages to produce two top times on the the all time lists in 2000m and 3000m. And this is a guy who couldn't even break 7:40 a year ago and all the previous years before. And it wasn't like he was hurt or sick for all those years. The truth is that Sergio Sanchez is nothing more than a b-c level elite runner who just found the right connections, handlers, doctors and now is taking full advantage of it. Alberto Garcia, the previous European/Spanish record holder in the 3k indoors tested positive for epo in 2003. He is from Spain as well, and the beginning of the year in 2003, he broke the 5000m European indoor record and 3000m record but was eventually found out. All I'm saying is that if it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck and walks like a duck than more than likely it's a ........... fill in the blank. You can go on and on about the hypothetical "what if's" all you want but at the end of the day it's all about the money for pharmaceutical companies.
7-8 years of consistent training yeilding the same medicore results 1500m 3:39-3:47 and 7:43-7:55.
JUST 4 months after a full 2009 track season of the same medicore results for the 9th year in a row..Sergio finds a four leaf clover mixture and makes a wish and PRESTO!
