Fastest woman at Lakefront Marathon DQ'd for taking water between aid stations

I'm glad that cheaters are getting caught.

this is yet another example of a small town hick event that thinks they are the friggin Olympic games.....the 1st women who crossed the finish line won the event, end of story. who-ever reported this so called infraction is a god-damn fool not to mention the race official who DQed her. If they had half a brain race officials would have taken the spotter aside and said yes, technically it is an infraction but as these rules are selectively and seldom enfored I'm not about to DQ the race winner...

Well put. If you DQ one person, then all those they get an extra gulp of water should also be DQd, as well as all other rule breakers, including those wearing headphones (which includes the "new" winner). Be fair across the board with your rules and people won't get upset about the enforcement.

I wouldn't run this race if it was the last f**king race on earth. They might as well DQ the entire field I'm sure many might have spit or god forbid spoken to their fellow runners enroute...what about slapping kids high fives or stopping to take a piss

Everyone knows the rules (what the speed limit is). Most people still break those rules. Only a small number actually get caught.

Ever been ticketed and tried telling the cop you shouldn't be charged because you've seen other people speed?

Or even car theft? How many of those rule breakers are actually caught? Guess if they aren't going to enforce the rules on everyone, then no one should be punished.

Lakefront Marathon officials are making a complete joke out of their event.

Making more reasonable comparisons would be appreciated. Speed limits are posted all along roads. Some of the rules associated with the race were rather ambiguous and not well known by many of the runners, if you have read the other comments. If you read the articles, she (best time) was rather new on the marathon scene and honestly wasn't aware she was breaking a rule. She has admitted that and is currently suffering the consequences. In the meantime, I've had a very difficult time locating information on this particular point of disqualification,.. unlike a speeding ticket.

OK you can't get a drink of water from anyone except at official aid stations, maybe USATF should ban spectators who might hand out illegal water.....seriously how F**KING stupid are LakeFront officials to bring this kind of negative attention to their event?...speaking of unfair advanatges how about the current use of pacers in major races where WRs are attempted. Just don't offer them H2O.

I think the organization of the Lakefront Marathon is at fault here for the dq of the 1st place woman for taking fluids.

I have not run this event but have many small marathons where there are simply not enough water/fluid stations.

The marathon according to the article I read has water stations at every 2 miles. Maybe someone that ran the race could confirm that.

The marathon officials acknowledged that they know there are many other runners that take outside aid but are not dq'd because they hold the elite runners to a higher standard. Then they should hold themselves to a higher standard and have elite fluid bottles available at the aid stations or have elite aid stations.

I'm not debating what the classification of "elite" is but if the marathon treats the people capable of winning their event to a higher standard then that should be fully explained to them prior to the event.

USATF Rules - "In addition to the water and/or refreshment stations provided at the beginning

and end of the race, for all events of 10km or longer, refreshment stations shall

be provided every lap. In addition to refreshments provided by the Organizing

Committee, athletes shall be permitted to provide their own refreshments at

refreshment stations. A competitor who collects refreshment from a place other

than a refreshment station is liable to disqualification by the Referee. In addition,

drinking/sponging stations for water only shall be placed approximately

midway between the refreshment stations or more frequently if weather conditions

warrant such provision."

This brings up a question though, if a non-elite made up his or her own bottles, and someone put them on the table right before the runner approached, this would be a legal way for joe blow to get whatever drinks he wants, correct?
