Teg at 140 miles a week? No way. Guys in that group have specifically done the kind of training Hudson is describing (Nelson does huge mileage now and Eagon a few years back did 120+ badger!) Teg has stated numerous times that he trains for his event, in order to move through rounds and compete on the world stage (as he has done better than any american over the past 3 years, not just having one great race here or there). Watch what can happen in a year when the world championships aren't the focus-AR will be rolled.
Not trying to start an argument over who's better him or ritz, just that he knows his body and what works for him. An athlete who could barely run 70mpw in college would not be stupid enough to jump up into 140 miles a week. 100? sure why not, thats more like 115 badger anyway.

Running is part of many east africans LIFESTYLE. They run to and from school, to and from farming, etc... They walk also, but walking does not get your heart rate up high enought to prepare heart and muscles for a competitve marathon. On the contrary, my sister spent 4 months in Nepal and the people there WALK everywhere. Running is not part of their LIFESTLYE. They have large calf muscles and are probably some of the best long distance hikers in the world. If running was part of their lifestyle I would guess we might see more of them running competitive marathons.

i know a nike athlete who was thinking about making the move to portland to be with schumacher's group. schumacher wanted him and claimed he would get him to 140 asap. apparently that was in line with most of the group, teg, solinsky, bairu, etc. so the 140 claim is pretty legit, probably not during the competition phase but at some point during pre season training.
remember 140 might be 100 mpw plus 40 mpw on alter g or underwater treadmill. nike has all sorts of supplemental training at their disposal so we don't really know what 140 means.

alter g miles? i understand what you're saying, but i guess if that makes the athlete better, make it so
140 is not that much for these guys. It all matters how you count it. These guys have no real job, they just run every day. If they did 90 miles a week in singles and tacked on an hour's jog at 7-minute miles 6 days a week, that's 140. Also, understand that an easy one-hour run for them is 10 miles, not 8 or 8.5 like it is for most of us. So if they ran at a moderate effort for only one hour a day, that's 70 miles a week. Change one day to a 2-hour long run and you're already at 80. The time they spend running 140 would only get a "normal" runner about 100-120 miles.

I know alot of you are thinking that Ritz was slow from marathon training but look at the above workout. Also please understand that mileage is just a small part of the base. You need aerobic work close.
I think it should be good to see how he does at World half-marathon because he may have a shot at winning.
When Ritz broke the AR my first thought was "Awesome! Well done!". My second thought was "poor Brad Hudson. Everyone is going to think it was because of his move to Alberto".
Reading that interview changed my perspective completely. How many cheap shots is Hudson going to take? It was unnecessary and unprofessional.

It is not a question of if 140 is much for these guys. The question is if Teg really does it. In all the interviews with him that I have read he has never mentioned that figure.

I think those comments are more digs at Nike than Ritzenhein, as they would be the ones writing the coaching stipend into the contract. As I mentioned earlier, Capriotti has no problem paying large amounts of money to coaches whose ethics (Cook, Rosa, Graham) and/or results (Raczko) are questionable. Things were promised and not delivered, all while they were actively trying to undermine the coach-athlete relationship.
He has not said a bad word about Ritz.

Salazar and Jerry make an insane amount to coach and have huge budgets. They have Phil's pockets and they use that to force athletes to train in Portland.
Could someone please explain what happened to Rowe at Nike? One minute he seems to be the man on the rise at Nike, next thing I hear he's fired, let go, laid off. What the hell happened?
You can't sustain your anaerobic threshold for 2 hours, so I think aerobic threshold is more accurate.
BK said in an interview that he was doing 140 mile weeks the winter before his 5k AR. 10 in the morning, 10 in the evening... every day though Feb and Mar (I believe). I would believe that Teg gets pretty close, but would also believe that he doesn't.
Ritz mentioned in an interview that his mileage is pretty much what it has been since he was a frosh... 100-110 a week (I believe). That was in a recent interview.
Jager, in an interview this summer, mentioned his mileage. I can't remember what it was, but 90 stands out. He flubbed around when the question was asked... I remember that. Didn't really seem sure what his totals were...
