I'm not saying whether he should have been DQ'd or not, but I can understand why he gave them the bow. Look at his body language, he was clearly upset at the crowd, how often does the winner of a race get booed? It was definitely a "Fvck You" type of move, and I can see why he did it in the heat of the moment. The guy's an intense competitor and things got out of hand.

Jimmy has been injured quite a bit throughout his career- sounds like winning the Heps 1500m was a very important goal for him. Dont forget a lot of these young men and women are just finishing up with finals, graduation etc. It's a very emotional time- give the KID a break. Our sport is dying fast- and criticism of acts of jubilation will not help. There was a 4x1 at the Texas Relays where the eventual winner turned a looked at the leader as he passed on the homestretch-

that’s grounds for a DQ- not this. He wasn’t mocking anyone- it looks like he was just happy to win- how can you DQ someone for that?

To all the people who drag out isolated incidents of other overcelebrations I present the countless humble winners who celebrated respectfully and congratulated their opponent as the way that you SHOULD act.

Screw off you pansy. Whats wrong with a little bit of celebration? Ooh, he should have showed more respect to his competitors, celebrating like that is unwarranted, he's such a jerk... go be passive-aggressive elsewhere on the internet.

The guy won a fairly competitive race with a big kick, he knew he had it won, he got excited, threw his hands up and got booed for it. He didn't pump his fists in the other runners' faces, he did nothing to instigate the crowd. So now there are people booing him for throwing his arms up. He didn't get pissed off, he didn't flip off the crowd, he didn't shout obscenities, he took a sardonic bow and stepped off the track.

Seriously, I don't get what the big deal was. I thought the bow was pretty funny. Now, I don't know Wyner- maybe he is a dick like people here are claiming. On the other hand, he's a pretty funny dick and I don't see the harm in goofing off.

Many times as I've finished a race, a guy has been celebrating in front of me. Never has it offended me- spurred me to do better next time, maybe, but never offended me. Maybe it was a little excessive, but still, who cares? Are we to punish youthful exuberance now?

I think it'd be interesting to take a poll of the other finishers in that race and ask each of them if they've ever celebrated a race like that before.

Sports are fun to watch. Sports with personality are more fun to watch. I like watching the Celtics playoff games just to watch Kevin Garnett scream "Motherf***er" in the faces of the other team. I realize this is just the Ivy League 1500m, but I watched that race 3 more times than I normally would have. Watching LBP's celebrations the past couple years were fun, too. If you don't like it, beat the guy next time and be "classy" doing it.

All the teams booing at the end of the race...give me a break. Again, this never would have happened if the guy got beat at the end.

wejo, how can you throw him out of the meet for something he hasn't been dq'd for? can you imagine the outrage if that had happened?

here's how i saw it from the video and knowing a bit of backstory - let me know if i have it wrong:

wyner isn't the most popular guy in the conference. he probably takes a lot of crap from other teams, and a lot of people root against him more than they would for other opponents. there was probably a good deal of sneers and jeers from other teams in the crowd during the race that were directed singly at wyner. when he knows he has the race in the bag, he lets the haters know it with a point, a fist pump, and a bow. he let his emotions get the best of him.

this is schoolyard rule #1: the second guy gets caught. other teams bait him into doing something, and when he bites and retaliates, he gets burned. gotta keep your head, son. you won the race: that says all there is to be said.

he's also no stranger to getting dq'd, so he should be on his best behavior. a freshman doing this, ok. a senior with a track record of dq's? come on - you should know better by now.

i think the dq was the right call. that said, what he did was no more unsportsmanlike than any of the trash that the crowd was throwing his way. but you can't dq a crowd. when you're on the track, you're an individual. it's not fair, but it's true. i don't know of many guys at many meets in college who would get away with that.

this DQ was totally undeserved. are they able to reverse these decisions?

there are a lot of guys i have raced that i have not liked for various reasons. among those, sure, it can be annoying if a guy is cocky, but i don't even think wyner was being that cocky; he celebrated, but he was still looking around him to be sure.

personally, i love the bow after the boo. do any of you guys recall the emotion you have after a race? in any other sport and even some folks in track, i'm pretty sure they go ahead and flip off the crowd. it's a nice thought to be on an entire other plane of maturity and not be bothered when people boo you, but i say bow.

I competed at Heps years back, and while it was an intense meet there was always a friendly sense amongst the schools. That does not seem the case now. What is this kid's history? Why is he such a lightning rod? There must be a prior history of bad behavior as people have alluded to, but other than an impeding a runner DQ what else?

What a douche. He bowed sarcastically to his competition. If I was Rojo, I'd kick him off the team.

He was pointing to Columbia fans that were cheering for him......Wyner was bowing in the direction of the finishing competitors, its easy to see how that can be taken as taunting.

I think it was pretty clear that he was bowing at the crowd that was booing.

The thing is, the conference meet is still friendly outside of this clip. I was there this weekend, and it was quite a shock to me to see Wyner flaunting his win at a point where someone could still outkick him to the line. While the video was taken from the air, when you were at raceside, it looked like the group was a tighter bunch for the finish.

Also, a thing or two about Darmouth. Dartmouth had been very "vocal" all weekend (and for all recent conference meets since it is in their nature to be as much), including singing their chants for their runners while other competitors were doing their jumps during the long and triple jumps (which got very annoying after 15 minutes). There were a few points were they took trash cans and turned them into drums (and one time were an event security officer came up to them to tell them they were stealing the trash can and ordered them to put it back, which Dartmouth did not do). I believe Dartmouth was reacting to Wyner's reactions while running, since it was Robbins of Dartmouth who was in the lead with 100m to go and was still close when the flaunting began. You'd have to ask a Dartmouth runner or volunteer coach (who was leading the weekend cheering for them) as for the booing.

I was away for days and just learned of this DQ and watched the video. I haven't read the previous 90 or so posts.

Here's the deal:

1) The kid seems like an immature douchebag ... but not, by any stretch, the worst I've seen.

2) Immature douchebag sometimes win things.

3) A kind of Stalinist rewriting of history to suggest some OTHER guy is the winner is fundamentally dishonest. Like, you know...it's a lie.

4) I thought the Ivy League didn't treat students like children. It didn't when I went there (not even from day one). Maybe things have changed.

5) Whoever came in second and is now declared the winner should not pretend he is the winner.
