OMG What happened to Webb's speed?

Watching Webb lately, he seems just to be going through the motions and really isn't into racing or training. He needs to do something to get interested or quit. I don't know if that means a new coach and change of scenery although that would be where I would start. Maybe talk to Vin and see if he could train with the Oregon boys. They have a really strong group of young, fast, talented 800/1500 guys

I don't think moving up in distance will help either. Currently it is all in his head and he has to figure it out. Getting beat by runners not even close to his talent will expedite the process. This will be a turning point year for him. He will either mentally get back in the game or he may quit or take a year off from competition.

Personally, we should all cut him some slack. He has been under tremendous pressure and scrutiny since he graduated HS and I think that is a big part of what is going on with him.

Webb looks fat. He needs to push away from the big macs.

He's a great talent but seems to have hit a rough patch in his career--early going. Let's see (flagpole!) what happens later in the year.

... the classic if he had another year in high school... last time I checked everyone gets 4 years, last time I checked Webb just turned 26 has won international races, has the American Record, as well as High School Record, and oh yeah has run 10 seconds faster for the mile, than German the World Contender... the point is lets not throw Webb under the bus until they race peaked out... Lets see Fernandez beat Rupp, and then we'll talk about him not getting completely owned by the Pros

Webb has the slight advantage, and better speed, but Fernandez instincts may get him farther along on the international stage. Time will tell.

Webb is taking the American bigger is better approach. Has he become muscle bound like Stember was at the tail end of his career. The weight room is not always the best place for the distance runner.

Webbs times in the last 10 months are what you would expect of Stember in 2002-05.

Despite Webb's checkered career, Fernandez is no where near Webb. In 2007 Webb accomplished more in one year than many runners do in a career. That said Webb maybe the most inconsistent 3:46 miler in history. Still, Lagat and Webb are the best we got. The other two guys that beat Webb out for the Olympic team are simply not on the same level. The US has been turning out 3:35 1500 meter talent like this for the last 30 years.

In all three Webb demonstrated a "deathly kick from hell".

800 pb he did no kick at all, as someone mentioned earlier, do not equate two fast laps with having a kick.

07 champs are probably the best example, but he only just out-dipped Lukezic in a slow race, he would need to do better than that.

That mile he beat Lagat in... he was just stronger, when Lagat faded in the last 50 webb went away, could he have got away from lagat 150-200 out? I don't think so, despite being the stronger runner.

I guess the part where February isn't a month of the year.

I don't care if he's not training or if he's training 120 mpw without touching a track, a 26-year old with Webb's PRs should be able to close faster than 57 after warming up for 1209m ... That was just sad to watch.

Not really true. In Webb's charmed 2007 season, he only ran a second better indoors than German just ran in his first indoor race ever. At 18 years of age, you can't expect him to have as many races under his belt, but in terms of huge performances per attempt, German is closer to Lagat than he is to Webb, IMO.

Thank you for picking Andy Wheating to make the Olympic team. I think it will probably be in the 1500, but any predictions without him in one of the middle distance events are pretty naive.
