German Fernandez is a Serious Threat to Win NCAA Cross Country Nationals

Uhh, you do know that Fernandez ran a faster time than Derrick alone in the open race don't you?

Fernandez will run faster than 7:53. His 2mile of 8:34 converts to 7:56. I predict he runs 7:50 and 13:25 and 28:00

German, Chris, and Luke. Looks like all 3 will be at Nationals. Will they actually think about who beats whom or will they run team efforts? Other than the media hype, how important is it to them at this stage of their running? There are other great American born rookies but the above 3 have piked the most interest. Stay tuned on Nov. 24th.

Side note. Are the Washington ladies wearing a target and has Oregon become the hunters? Bets are that Oregon will try to run their top 3 in front of the top 3 underclass Huskies. Will experience help? Will Vin the magician pull a couple more rabbits from this hat? God, I love XC/CC or whatever.

Saying German will beat Rupp is like saying Rupp will beat Bekele.

I could see Fernandez beating Rupp in a 1 mile race. It would be hard for Fernandez to beat Rupp in a 2 mile race, and I think it's safe to say that Rupp would definitely have odds in his favor in beating Fernandez at anything 3 miles or longer, seeing as how Rupp ran 13:30 to beat Solinsky 2 seasons ago. This was before Rupp ran a negative-splitted 27:33. Rupp is in a different class than Fernandez, although I think Fernandez will be there one day. Same for Derrick, and Puskedra should make it there someday too. Hopefully none of these runners fall to the way-side a la Withrow. Is he still bicycling to stay in shape?

You are an idiot. Despite all Rupp's disgusting advantages, it's not even close to the same thing. German could've gone 15-20 seconds faster in an actual race, putting him no too far behind the Liberty guy.....who will likely beat Rupp at Nats. German was better than Rupp as a HS senior, and will be better in each subsequent year barring any major injuries.

You are retarded. Rupp beat Solinsky in a race - big deal. Everyone acts like Solinsky was peaked for that race. He broke away from Rupp, then died at the very end. It was a 13:30 race - big F'n deal. Solinsky's PR is much faster than Rupp will probably ever run (yeah I said it - 13:12).

What do you base this on? He ran the time he ran, no better an no worse. Even if he did run 20 seconds faster in an "actual race", Chelanga would still have had him by 20+ seconds.

Chelanga ran his time alone too. German had teammates with him for the whole race.

This is ridiculous having to minimize the fantastic achievements of a true Frosh, but you knobslobbers need to get off this kid's nuts. Yes he is good. We know this, for f***s sake. unfortunately for your argument, he has not yet run the times that Rupp has. Until he does, Rupp is faster. It doesn't matter what you project him running, Rupp is an Olympian and has run times that German couldn't dream of touching at the moment. Whether he will or won't in the future is immaterial.

What is Rupp's fastest 2mile or 2k?

While I do identify myself as a German fan, and I don't believe we've seen even close to what he's capable of for this season (with his team essentially holding him back every race), I do think it is HIGHLY unlikely for German to beat Rupp or Chelanga (assuming they each run to their own respective abilities). If German had good competition it seems he should be able to cut off a lot of time, but more than 40 seconds is pushing it (even for a German fan to fathom).

And because Oklahoma State is so invested in the team title, we may be seeing German playing it safe for the rest of the season. If we are going to see a breakout race for German it will probably have to wait for track.

I raced against Chelanga. Even though I was nowhere near him, I am pretty confident in saying he would absolutely throttle German no mattr what day it is. He will probably beat Rupp, too.

7:49 for 3km. The point is more Rupp can run two 13:45s back to back whereas it's not for sure that German could break 13:45 for 1 5km.(point tables put 13:45 roughly equal to 8:38 for 2 miles, although arguably a 5km is harder to run than a 2mile for a highschooler. Of course this will change as German matures, but as of now this is the disparity between German and Rupp. Also worth noting is an 8:34 2-mile is worth the same amount of points as a 28:40 10km. This is assuming Fernandez is in equivalent 2mile and 10km shape. I would give him more like 28:50-29:00.

I'm not "sucking on Rupp's balls", because I think it's highly likely that Chelanga could beat Rupp at NCAA's, but just trying to cool the German will do so well now. German is definately a strong contender for Top-10 now, and WILL BE a strong contender for a national title in 1-2 years providing all goes well with his training.

they ran the jamboree easy. dave smith told them to leave a lot in the tanks, but still win.

i saw them come in. the harding guy was hurting, but german and crew didn't even look tired. they then ran some victory laps.

he won't hold back at all at nats. he'll empty his tanks. seriously.

If you guys would watch some interviews, you'd realize that German hasn't run all out yet. It looks like he even held back some in his 23:34, so he probably could have run at least 23:20 in an all out effort. Given the fact that if Kosgei is healthy German is number 3 just on OSU's team, I doubt he's winning NCAAs, though a top 10 finish is likely. Chelanga really looks like the favorite right now, but Rupp could win. It really wouldn't surpise me if Vail or Kosgei won though either.
