Navy SEALs vs. Green Berets vs. Marine Force Recon vs. British SAS?

USMC Recon is the toughest and has the most killing and fighting experience since they spend the same amount of time in combat fighting as the rest of the USMC. USMC Recon training is much more extreme and tougher as it has been for nearly 300 years. As a pre-requisite, Recon candidates attend other U.S. services special schools to save the Pentagon money, after which Recon candidates must endure a USMC-only school to earn the Recon designation. The hazing in the school is sick and sadistic, a large percentage of the personnel of other services special units would fail. Also USMC Recon is not allowed by Congress to spend time in the rear training and planning. By law, U.S. Marines must fight, thus Recon suffers the same high casualty rate as the rest of the USMC.

I'm not picking one SF group over the other here, but most of your information is simply incorrect. Green Berets are not butt kickers like the rangers??? Green Berets ARE the rangers, or rather the best rangers get recruited for Green Beret training. Marine Recon are good but not the SEALs??? Actually, Marine Recon train Navy SEALs.

Actually your information is incorrect.

First of all, the term SF (Special Forces) applies to Green Berets ONLY. Everything else, (SEALs, Delta, Rangers, etc.) are SOF (Special Operation Forces). And Green Berets are not Rangers. While some guys do make the crossover to SF from a Ranger BN, not all that many do. And there is a HUGE difference between being Ranger qualified, (attending USA Ranger School) and being in Ranger BN, (not even all in a Ranger Battalion are Ranger School graduates). Only one guy on my team spent time in Ranger BN, yet half have a Ranger Tab.

And secondly, just because there may be an instructor from Marine Recon, or other elements of SOF, at various schools or training SEALs receive, does not mean that Marine Recon are as good as the SEALs. It only means that a particular individual is a subject matter expert. The SEALs have a much broader skill set. SEALs need to attend Airborne Training, and I guarantee that the average Airborne instructor, (who only needs to hold a particular rank and be a graduate of the Airborne School), is not good enough to be a SEAL.

I'm just telling this as how and what I observed. 80'-90's...Well USMC recon dive training was At Ford Island PH, ( I acually ran into a former HS student of mine who was there training at the time.) Plus they were at Coronado Navy base recieving training there too. Most Of my Jumps when USMC were present, My self and others had 90% more jumps than any USMC. The army had some really good pilots flying C-130's. best pilots for jumps.

All Seal jump training started after Bud's at Ft. Benning ( by the Army). Then Navy Leap frogs train seals at halo(west coast) Scott Helvenston {KIA Iraq} was my free fall instructor. Seal's stated their own sniper traing using (marine or army as a model) I just don't remember which one? I have never heard of the UsMC traing anyone in the teams? Most Seal's were not real big guys due to the nature of the Buds training (leg stress fractures elliminated so many) Not until they switch to more softer sole(hiteck) boots did men over 6'0 start getting through Buds.

Dev group is where alot of the bad ass, gun friken, hell bent and high water guys disappear to.

Army Rangers seem to have had more time to stay in top physical shape.

The marines have always been America's special forces since the 1700's. So why does the Pentagon waste money and have duplicate jobs. I know about the story of the $1000 airplane toilet seats, but are they still wasteing money like that.

Yes, there are some Marine Recon dudes that are SEALS instructors too, since the school has instructors from other branches. GB, PJ, DF take SEALS school also, and vice-a-versa, SEALS take GB, PJ, DF, Ranger schools. Recon school is exclusive to Marines though who have there own ways. All SFs work together nicely now. It's not the old days of the inter-service rivalries.

Take away the guns, armor, helmets and fight man to man, and the ROK Marines will kick the shit out of the SPETSNAZ, SAS, Green Berets, Recons, Seas, etc. any day, even with one armed tied behind their backs.

Me,1988 Class 155....MOS.Nov. 1994, I will restate that I never heard or saw any seal's being trained by the USMC. But it was possible that (name?) who was tasked to set up the seal sniper training did go to either the Army or marine sniper training school. Used that as a model. (Team 5 ) After about a year it was redone by a more compitant operator who went back and trained at either of the Army/USMC. I just don't remeber which. But I do remember being part of the first seal training group.

I never was in due to medical issues. All services should have our respect and the SF guys as well. USMC Reconaisance and USAR Green Berets, USAF Parajumps have been overlooked by Hollywood movie producers in recent years. Give credit to the USN Public Affairs Office, but please don't bash the service guys. All of the SFs are essentially 90% similar with each having emphasis on their host military branch. The GBs/Delta are good at languages and training counterinsurgents. The SEALs are good at swims and dives. PJs are good at jumps and rescue. Recon is good when the enemy knows you are coming. Also, I want to say thank you to all servicemebers and veterans.

FYI I haven't been on a real world combat swim or dive in my entire NSW career. I haven't even been on a training dive the last 5 yrs! I get requaled by bouncing around at the bottom of the CTT(combat training tank) for 20min. once every six months to keep my dive pay. The current war has "EVERYONE" on land. Even the SDV Teams are doing land work. All these general statements by a bunch of no nothing internet geeks is stupid. This "who is the toughest" thread is really, really gay.

stupid question SEALS have the hardest training in the world or at least of the US military. They are the most badass of all the branches and could kill anyone. Their training is so hard that like maybe every 5 out of 100 make it to hell week. My friend(who just happened to be a seal for 6 years of his life) said that its so hard that sometimes trainees have to wait a couple weeks to finish hell week because they have to have a certain number of people in a group and alot of times they have to wait for another group to get through their training and join them. He also said that they also are now gonna open it up to other branches because they cant get enough people to finish training.

Training programs are subjective. Who trains the hardest for the marathon, for instance ? Does it really matter ? It's who wins the marathon that matters. Training doesn't mean squat. Recruiters hype this service over that. Even the Coast Guard, who are just low paid fire department fatbods have a recruiting slogan "Jobs That Matter" as if Army, USAF, USMC, and USN jobs don't ;-( It the end it's who wins, and from the current conflict in the Middle East, Hamas, Al Quaeda, Hezbollah, etc. are the toughest in the world. They are winning without any high-tech arms against the countries with the best military technology in the world.

Precisely what I have been trying to say in previous points...I don't care if you are SEAL, Green Beret, SAS or whatever, you survive your mission and training you go back to your wealthy country with a pension, GI bill etc...(as you should be provided by a wealthy country) Hamas, Hezbollah, go home to nothing as their families have been killed already and they are barely literate...

Someone said SEALs regard Ranger School as punishment; that is absolutely inaccurate. The SEALs I know, which is quite few, applied for Ranger school and are very proud of completing the course.

As a start, I spent a good part my military career in SOCOM and I've worked with most of the units mentioned on this board. Note; just about all SOCOM units attend each others courses and most of the units have more in common than differences. SEALs spend more time on the ground doing light infantry-type ops than waterborne ops, SF whose job is primarily teaching and counter-terrorism, etc.; they also spend a lot of their time in light infantry type ops. Airforce Pararescue training is at least 70% Ranger-type ops. Llikewise, a lot of Rangers are SERE, scuba, combat diver, and underwater demolitions qualified and train to complete a variety of waterborne operations. My Ranger school class consisted of Marine Recon, SF, SEALS and elite units from several NATO countries. The U.S. Army Rangers are a known quantity to just about all elite units around the world and it about the only unit where I have never heard a serious bad word about Rangers. Rangers do a little bit of what all of the elite units do, but they are primarily light infantry soldiers, and they are the best at what they do. (Period) For most of the elite units, the most difficult part is the selection process and the school, but the life of a Ranger mirrors Ranger school. There are no women, weak or overweight Rangers; they have to maintain a high level a physical fitness and advanced state of readiness. The life of a Ranger is tough, living quarters are very basic, which is ok, because 75% of the time you will either be deployed or in field training. You can’t make a career of it; when you leave the Ranger Regiment your body is a wreck and probably a few other things as well.
