Herb Wills was the 2nd American finisher at Boston one year if I am not mistaken
He was actually the first American. I think it was sometime in the late 80s.
Mitch Kingery went San Carlos High and was coached by Jim Luttrell. Mitch was my childhood hero and he dated my best friend's older sister. I attended many of his races at SC, Crystal Springs, and his first year at the College of San Mateo.
The actor, Dana Carvey attended Carlmont High, where his father was an instructor. Dana ran for Coach Loren Lansberry. Coach Lansberry consistently produced outstanding X-C and track teams along with Plato Yannicks of Menlo Atherton High.
So, in reality, Mitch and Dana were not high school teammates but rivals - SC "Dons" vs Carlmont "Scots." An almost hated rivalry, as many cross-town schools often experience. However, the Scots had a dominant athletic program and beat SC many times - but the Kingery years were our reprieve.
Does anyone know Mitch's birthday? He might have the CCS 14yr old 2 mile record depending when he turned 15. I know he was 15 by Dec 27, 1971 but if he was still 14 when he ran the Postals in Nov then he could have the record.
Carvey indeed ran 4;30 at the SPAL finals in '73 for i out-kicked him in the last 80yds to run 4;29.2

That time for Arcadia is not for 2miles, but converted for 3200 meters. Thom Hunts best high school 2mile is 8:45.2
Ehhh, 8:45.. I prefer faster myself.
I ran 2:46 at 14 years old - 9th grader to beat Huston that day back in 1979. He was 12 two days before his 13th birthday trying to get work age group record at the time. I lied about my age to make sure I could run in the race. I beat him and him coach was very mad at the time!

Clancy Devery: 2:23:05 at Trail's End Marathon, Seaside, Oregon (this was not an easy course) on the last Saturday in February, 1977. The course is considered aided because it is a point-to-point. The finish, however, is approximately 75 meters from the start and 15 feet higher than the start (so it should not be considered aided). I was a H.S senior in the race. I believe Canadian Brian Maxwell won the race in 2:14.
I totally agree that Trail's End was NOT an aided course. I ran it in 1975 and it was tough. Lots of small but steep hills - so even downhills pounded your legs - and being on the Oregon coast in .Feb,. it was windy!
I can't believe the High School Marathon Record has lasted this long, Hopefully the Newbury Park Kids run at least one, or at minimum a Half Marathon, They should EASILY go under 2:23 by at LEAST 10 Minutes

Is that 4:02.7 former indoor HS mile record holder Thom Hunt? How many people have ever been the best - at any level - in the marathon and the mile at the same time?
I've heard of him before, but don't know details. How strong was his deuce in HS? 5k/10k in college?
The top HS runners rarely run marathons so Hunt wasn’t necessarily the best with his 2:24. It’s likely that guys like Chapa, Salazar and Hulst could have run faster.
It doesn’t make sense for HSers to run the marathon. It’s is an injury risk and will always be a soft record.
