I think they're referring to LONG distances. Not MIDDLE distances.

I'll never forget hearing about this, and not believing it. 11 seconds??? WTF??? Geb's form on this run is extraordinary. And here we are 12 years later, wondering if he'll do a Thon WR, or Oly Gold next year.
I wrote that in Sep 2007. Well, the 2008 Beijing thing didn't quite pan out (but he still ran great), however, you all know about the Thon.
Unf***enbelieveable.
As an aside, it kills me when peoiple say Geb ducks the real competition.
SINCE WHEN?
Even his flunkies in the Thon are going 2:05/2:06 ffs!!!
'There was still no test for EPO in the mid 90s'
There was in the 00's when these times were improved
If these times are EPO aided then the recent sub 13 times, by (a lot less talented US) runners not born at altitude must also be
The only reason the times have slowed is that the Golden League big $ went for the win rather than the time
I think the commentators framed the situation quite nicely. If you watch Daniel Komen's 3km record, they say many of the same things.
-Up until recently, sub-13 was a monumental accomplishment, only the very best of the best could do it. By the mid 90s, you started to see guys you never heard of doing it, or at least coming close.
-Geb completely obliterated the WR. In one of the most commonly contested races in history, when the world record was considered very strong already, Geb lopped 11 seconds off. Thats almost a 1.5% improvement in one race.
Between 1994 and 1998, the world record dropped from 12:58 to 12:39. 3 guys brought the record down by almost 20 seconds in 5 years. It has taken more than 20 years for the prior 20 seconds to come off. Its the suddenness of the jump that makes it suspicious.
Great post. The paranoia on here is reaching levels of self-parody. This board is to athletics what Joe McCarthy was to reasoned political debate.
Anyways, talking of drugs, look-ee at what I just found :O

I have NO IDEA how this hasn't been brought up yet. Why do you guys think that the Kenyans and Ethiopians have the best drugs around? Clearly they beat all the Americans and Europeans because the depth of scientific research and capital in these countries are astounding.
Grow up. They're better then us.
The Zurich race was the one that motivated me, as a 38-year-old fitness runner, to go to the track and run some intervals. It hurt, and I was relatively slow, but it began my master's track career that lasted for over a decade, had some success, and hopefully will continue this summer. Geb's sunny countenance reminded me of wonderful the feeling of being in good shape and cruising through the laps was. Truly a bodhisatva of running!
Here is Geb's debut on the world stage (Stuttgart '93). What an epic race by Kirui and the Ethiopians. Geb seems to defer to his teammates, then sprints just a little too late...

who give a fucc?
bekele has several seconds faster than that on numerous occasions. whu would u rather watch this, when there are several videos of bekele running much faster in that distance?
you children and novice runners really amuse me.
go fucc urself
'There likely are a few Americans doping. The reason it may not be so rampant is because they are not over in Europe and do not have European managers and coaches'
You have spells of being ok, then straight back to being a moron. What about all the American sprinters busted?

Bekele has run faster than 12:44 a grand total of twice. Also, you're a terrible troll.
Wang Junxia
wow - the geb of the female world. 14:26 for her closing 5000m(of her 10000m WR). Ran 8:17 final 3000m. She was running faster than WR pace for 5k and 3k in the final 5k and 3k of her 10000m.
15:05, 14:26.

Wang Junxia, best ever.
Wow, I've never seen those videos. I always thought film of her records couldn't be found. Anyone else notice the runner being dragged by the coach on the motorcycle at 2:04 until she collapses?
'Between 1994 and 1998, the world record dropped from 12:58 to 12:39' Actually 12:56
Here are the improvements over the years:
1958 13:35
1968 13:16 19 secs
1978 13:12 4 secs
1988 12:58 14 secs
1998 12:39 19 secs
2008 12:37 2 secs
