I wrote Mary and the NYRR saying we (myself and people on letsrun) would help set up the stations if asked.
I also stated how I thought it was unfair for some competitors to have an advantage over another at an Olympic Trials in the race. Assuming all "B" qualifiers are treated the same then Dan Browne will be at a disadvantage trying to make the team. This just isn't right. Especially when no one knew of the rule in advance.
Christ this shit pissed me off. NYRR expects us to believe a race with 40,000 people can be pulled off, but not individual bottles for several dozen? What a joke.
It's not f#cking hard. Just do 8 or so tables, with prominent signage saying "A-C, D-F" etc. It's not many bottles per table, so congestion is a non-issue and with distinctive bottles and markers things work fine. And everyone competes under the same conditions.
Now, where I have seen this crazy idea? Oh, yes, a meet called the "Olympic Games" -- where the winners will be competing.

Glad to hear that you got this done. Goes to show the Letsrun crowd what can happen when you take action to make changes in the sport.
Thank you Letsrun for brining this to light and providing the appropriate amount of pressure to the idiots that are in charge. The saddest part of this whole situation has been the lack of support from Latimer and Estes. These guys are supposed to be working for the athlete. Every email exchage with them sounds like they are working for the NYRR instead of the athlete. Thank You Letsrun for being the one that sees us athletes as important.
the "B" qualifiers did indeed know in advance what it meant to not meet the "A" standard. I feel more empathy toward the guys who ran 2:21, but anyone who opted not to qualify through a marathon knew in advance that they would then not qualify for "A" standard incentives.
You should NOT be able to qualify for the Olympic Trials MARATHON with a 5k/10k time. Does Alan Webb qualify for the 10k? Or better, do "A" standard marathon runners qualify for the 10k? If not, why? Because there's no room on the track, right? Make heats.
If athletes planned accordingly, made sacrifices in training/racing, then they (perhaps) could have met the "A" qualifying standards. Since people like Dan Browne did take the time/effort to qualify through a marathon, he will have to deal with "B" standard treatment.
Maybe you haven't heard Mary W has backed down due to pressure from this web site. The several emails did no good. But something that might effect the publicity train got to them.
If this changes I guarantee it will not be because Latimeer or Estes fought for the athletes. It will be because someone forced the NYRR's hands. Our sport is being led by folks that are clueless.
That's not true, if you hit the "A" standard in an event in track, you can run a different event, as long as it's within reason. Dig through the rules, it's in there somewhere. It just doesn't happen, because most people want to run the race that they have the "A" standard in. Sometimes they double up, though.

Jorge Torres won the USATF 10k championship without ever running a 10k before nationals.

Exactly. It's perfectly fair, just like it's fair that A qualifiers get airfare and hotel and B qualifiers don't. It's simply a perk that goes along with being an A qualifier. If B qualifiers or anyone else doesn't like it, then run the A qualifier time and your problem will be solved. No B qualifier will make the team, anyway, or even be in the lead pack past 20 (or even 18 or 15) miles. A qualifiers are there to take a shot at the team spots, B qualifiers are there out of charity.

Help me clear this up, because you're suggesting something that comes across really weird here. Are you saying that guys would not risk injury for free hotel and airfare, but would to have personal bottles at the race? That's some screwy prioritizing that you're ascribing to these people.

They're "working on it?" What the hell does that mean? Is there some kind of Water Table Workers Union they need to pay off first? Or did they fear Wejo union-busting goons coming in and taking out all of the tables? They are either going to treat all of the qualifiers the same or they're not. It's that simple.
