On Jen Rhines, her PR (2006) is 14:55.18. This run tonight (14:58.51) is, to the best of my recollection, the second sub-15:00 5000 of her career.
Hard to say what Jen is, since she won 3 NCAA 5000 championships (I think), but made the olympic team at 10,000 and at marathon. She's got very good range; she'll even put in a few 1500s on the circuit each year. My guess is, though, that she is primarily a 10,000 / marathoner more than anything else.
I watched the stream of the race; Flanagan tried to run up front and paid for it at the end. Never saw Jen or Deena, since they were well back and the coverage was focused only at the very front. Kim Smith (NZ) ran a PR for second.
a good point about symmonds is that he was running out in lane 2/3 for most of the race, which is something that's going to happen a fair amount if he's going to run at the back without being content in sitting on everyone and taking up the rear. i did think he went out exceptionally slow tonight and seemed to be gapped by about ten meters coming off the first turn. it's one thing if he maintains that gap through the first lap, but he made if up within the 300 mark when they showed him next. it doesn't seem like it would have taken that much more out of him, and might have taken less out, if he would have just gone with them the first 100 and hung at the back of the pack rather than having to surge at in the middle of the first lap.
He should have learned that hanging in the back of the pack aint gonna work in Europe after it didn't work in the US National Meet.
European middle distance races are a little different than your average DIII sit-and-kick victories.
Welll...i'd have to argue that Symmonds has a pretty good strategy. Go to college, get a degree, run fast, and spend the next 10 years getting paid to travel all over the world while banging hot foreign chicks. I'm gonna take a wild guess and bet that his strategy is a little better than most
