You've "consulted" for Goldman Sachs. That's impressive.
Anyway, why don't you answer my question?

Where is the "Economist" who consults for Goldman Sachs? He calls DaveBedfordwannabe and Gandalf "retarded" and then disappears when confronted with logic. (Typical insecure bully.)
It's hard to run as fast in a time trial than it is to run in a race. The reason Pre didn't drop his pr in any event by a large substantial amount, could be because he pretty much was the rabbit in every race.
Someone stated earlier that a kiwi "destroyed" Pre when Pre was in his prime. Pre didn't like racing the kiwi's because they would just sit on him and then out kick him when he was spent doing all the work. Who's to say that if pre was forced to follow because of a stronger pace that the africans now provide, that he wouldn't have dropped his pr by 10 or so seconds?
When Prefontaine finished third in the "July Games" two mile in Stockholm in 1973, he set a PR of 8:18. It would be his greatest international performance. Did he lead this race? And if so, when did Rod Dixon and Emiel Puttemans pass him? Was it in the home stretch?
regardless of his times and competition, pre gave a faceless sport a face and brought personality to the track. hate him or love him give him the props he deserves for what he did for the sport in a short period of time.
OK, then. I shouldn't be so negative. Prefontaine would have dropped his 5,000 PR to 13:09 before the 1976 Games. He would have beaten Viren in the 5,000 after leading the entire way and holding off Viren's withering kick.
La, la, la, la, la, la!
i said NOT CONSIDERING TIMES... sure by todays standards pre would not be all that fast and people build him up a lot but it was about the persona and the attitude.
Well not having being born when the race happened, makes it hard for me to say. I'm making the assumption that he lead the vast majority of the race because of what I read in the book written on Pre. It's been a while since I last read the book and since I'm in Iraq right now, I can't fall back to the book as a resource. But I remember what he had to say about the kiwis(Rod Dixon, John Walker) and how he hated to race them because of the way they raced. With the Speed Rod Dixon had it wouldn't surprise me much if he took the lead from Pre on the bell lap and put 4 seconds on him.
It wouldn't surprise me if Prefontaine set a PR because Dixon and Puttemans dragged him along.
Did anyone actually see the race? Does anyone know how it played out?
Faster is not better when comparing someone in the 70's and neither is comparing place. Why can't people say, "Pre was great for his era." and "Rupp is showing potential!"

Lynn Jennings

Those are the ones I remember; who else has won an Olympic or World Championship medal >/= 800 m, or World Cross title?*

ah yes, you've tried this one before on other threads... you lose because you are not posting... it is actually my bed time where I live and that is where i am headedto be clear i actually don't consult for goldman sachs currently... my current position does not allow that... I did some credit risk for them about 2 years agoi didn't see any new logic in davebedfordwannabe's statements, to me what clear what he meant by his original statement, he insinuated it was unlikeley pre would have improved... I'm not keep getting into a pissing match over this

Oh, time to go to bed now? Before you do, can you please show the statement where I "insinuated" that Pre wouldn't improve?
Your entire "rebuttal" hinges on twisting what I said to make it sound fallacious.
Stop talking about felatio--this isn't that kind of site.Meanwhile, DBWNB, it's already been stated that Pre wasn't the greatest US runner of all time, and arguing about what could have happened in 1976 is utterly pointless. However, he did beat Bedford at the 72 Olympics, did he not? And didn't Shorter also beat him in the 10?

Jimmy Johnson is WAY better than Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart.
