Top All Time Kansas Distance guys

thanks for the mile updates on your teammates, I will add them to the lists! Was Mark Rabuse also from Kansas? any idea of where he went to high school.

p.s. i had Shreves running a 3:48.?? for his best 1500m but that is unoffical (as in never really verified)

actually, Mark Rabuse was from the Mo. side, but went to PSU, so I don't know if he qualifys or not. He went to Ruskin. Another guy at PSU, after me, in the late 70's, I believe, Marquardt, ran a 3:49 1500m, too.

Not to create work for you, but alot of the Ks school websites for T and F have a 5 deep list for their events. PSU does, I believe. A good source for updating the KS lists?

also, Clark Hamilton, who went to SMN, ran a 4:06 mile at MU in college, I believe, or a 3:48 1500m.

Kanas City is a confusing place for non midwesterners. there is kansas city on the Kansas side and a Kansas City on the Missouri state side. Then when I ask someone that I meet if they are from Kansas city kansas or kansas city missouri, they say neither, but some other city in kansas city, like the 'lee summit' you mentioned. very confusing.

Gene's sons are Ladd, Jeremy and Shane. All three ran at KU too. Jeremy and Shane were twins who ran like 4:15 in HS but Jeremy almost died when a drunk driver hit him on a run in the 90's. Ladd was a pretty sweet mountain runner (still has one of the closer times to Carpenter's "incline" record in the Springs.)He got hurt running a fila race in Mexico but transitioned to mt. biking and rode for the Fischer team for a couple of years before retiring.

yes, thanks found the PSU top 10 list - although it does not seem to include mile times...only 1500 meter indoor and outdoor times are listed - so I still can't confirm a couple of those times (Hamilton 4:06) and (Nixon 4:08) and are you sure Marquardt is a Kansan?

I was able to update your own time and a few others from the PSU site - so thanks for the researching tip.

yes, the PSU, 1500m, all time list has conversions, like me, and shreves, among others. Back then, they only ran the 'meters' races in the Olympic years and I was injured in '76, so I have no decent meter times. Nixon ran his 4:08 mile down at Austin, Texas, in April of '73. Shreves ran his 4:08 mile at NAIA Nationals in '73. I ran my 4:05 at KU Relays University mile, in '74. I'm not sure if Marquardt is from Kansas, but I would assume so.

Clark Hamilton ran at MU. but was from Shawnee Mission North and grew up in Ks.

btw, Mike Nixon was the NAIA X-C champion in '72, back when the NAIA was 'much stronger and deeper' then it is today. He beat some top foreigners there at the very hilly William Jewel course in Liberty, Mo. He only lost 1 race that entire season, the 1st week of Sept. The 1st meet of the year, the Wichita State/PSU dual meet. The shorter, 4-mile distance was perfect for 4 minute miler Alan Walker, just back from Europe. I think they both ran in the 18's. I just watched from way back as an 'overwhelmed freshman'. 4 miles seemed like a marathon to me at that time.

Well just off the top of my head. Boyers 3200 last year as a junior was 9:08, 1600-4:17, and he ran a 5k in the 14's on a cross course. He is from Fredonia, KS. He has won at least 6 state titles for class 3a but with his times he would of won every class.

Sounds like a blue chipper if he stays healthy, runs in the 8:50s and 4:13ish this year , where do you think he will go to college?

I should have told you to put an "r" next to Nixon's 4:08, as he did it anchoring our DMR at the Texas Relays. (that's why it wasn't on the PSU list).

And Joe Falcon was from right next door in Belton, MO.

Actually Mark Curp grew up in Polo, Mo (quite a bit north of KC and not part of metro area). He later went to Central MO State University in Warrensburg. He only moved to Lee's Summit as an adult out of college.

His sister was quite fast as well and won state titles and I believe also became an all-american at CMSU.

& got his ass handed to him every time he raced against out of state competition (AAU doesn't count). There have been plenty others in the small classes to have that many titles. If he were in 6a, he would have 2 at best. Don't get me wrong, I think the kid has talent & has run some great times, but nothing about him has gave me that feeling that he's going to do much beyond the HS level. He reminds me of Ryan Deak. I hope he proves me wrong.

getting to this thread a little late, but thought i'd throw out a few ramdom thoughts,...

I was reading pretty quickly, so could have missed but i didn't see Curt Shelman listed anywhere. I believe he had a good career at Ft.Hays, and certainly was dominant on the Kansas scene throughout the 80's. Also, i beleive Brian Zwahlen from SMNW ran 4:07 or so at KSU in late 80's. Apart from being a great guy, he was tough as nails: he wasn't a cross country guy (800-mile), but due to a team in shambles from injuries, he helped out in i think '89, and finished 10th-12th at Big 8s.

I ran summer track with Marcus in high school and then was with him at KSU (after he ran at Barton, i think), and what a talent!!! The first time i trained with him, he ran in high tops...he was so raw then, but really blossomed later.

I saw Terry Drake listed as KSU, but i beleive he was a Swede, then transferred to Azuza Pacific. However we did train with Terry at KSU while he was a grad asst. Terry had run Oly Trials in '84 and was still in great shape. Just remember getting buried by him on repeat 1000s...Anyone who knows him would agree...Terry was a great influence on us young guys.

Was Mike Vanatta a Kansas product? Again, he trained a bit a KSU (also '84 oly trials), while wife Chris was there...which brings me to a few female standouts:

Last random thought...I too was surprised to see WycoLoco was relatively young...he's knows his history so well...
