Michigan Upper Peninsula
Michigan Upper Peninsula
its the smallest state, it makes sence that they would have the worst runners; because that is the state with the least ammount of runners to choose from.

Just because Rhode Island is the smallest in land area does NOT mean it has the smallest population of any state. Alaska, Delaware, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont and Wyoming all have smaller populations.
This year Idaho has some pretty solid programs. 2 boys team ranked in NTN northwest and 1 in girls. Plus taylor Farnsworth looks to be an outside contender to make it to footlocker nationals. Team Idaho also has won 2 national championships in a row as a team at JO's.
Mississippi has only had ONE FL finalist ever. (Julia Cathcart) And they times are consistently awful, especially in the small classes.
Not only is McAlpine flat and fast - its short. Quite short.
I know I may be one of maybe twelve people who really cares, but...
I wish they would combine the UP and LP cross champs. I think it would help UP cross to compete at a higher level by exposing some of the athletes to higher competition at a state final. Secondly, there have been very talented kids to come out of the UP that could have competed well at a combined state final. I.e. Litzner, Remein (sp?), Cihak... etc. Also, on the girls side especially, Anderson twins, Long, Smith, they were very, very good.
Personally, I would have much rather had finished 8th in a combined state finals 1600 than first in a UP 1600.
The school I competed for at the time I was in high school was in a LP conference with TC Central and West, Gaylord, Petosky, etc. We had several fast guys in the conference like John Hughes. I raced him and got throttled running something like 4:29 which at that time was a PR. I was beat before I touched the track. I think it is a culture problem. You have to race fast people to build a fast culture. If that makes any sense. Anyway, I know there have been really good kids to come out of the UP, I would just like to see it happen more often.
Oh, and about the xc finals.. Times are usually very slow because the races are very tactical. At least in my era. I knew there were only one or two guys who could run with me. I didn't have to run 15:30 to beat them. We normally sat on eachother and make a race out of the last 800m. And, a lot of times (my Junior year) it was in about 4 inches of snow and 30 mph winds..

The Truth Doctor wrote:Thanks for the answer. It's interesting that Arkansas, a state with a University that is a perrenial power in distance running, sucks so bad at the high school level. I guess the Razorbacks aren't doing much recruiting in state.
You guys are really underestimating Wyoming. They definitely aren't one of the hardest states, but they have a couple programs that are very good and consistently churn out sub 4:20, sub 9:30 type guys so they couldn't be the easiest state to be state champ in.
Yes, Wyoming may be one of easiest to be top ten, but they always have a couple guys up there that can fly. It's not the easiest to win an individual title. The top underclassman at NXN Northwest was a kid from Wyoming. Also, they don't have 4 classes for XC - not sure where that came from.
I'd have to say Nevada would be easiest.

So its not that Louisiana has terrible runners, we just have way too many classes. In my opinion we should have 2 instead of 7.
Ok- wow. This wins. That's 3 mile times? Those are guys, right? Just wow.
Since I really despise the Mississippi private school system (initially set up so that the white kids wouldn't have to compete against the black kids, though it's not QUITE like that anymore): the winner of the smallest of three divisions this year ran 20:12 for 5k. He's a guy. That's probably your winner.
Cali. Every other state says we are over rated.

Here's a question - Is there any State that has NEVER qualified a Footlocker/Kinney finalist (boy or girl)? I guess I could do the research myself, but I thought someone might know off the top of their head.[/quote]
No boys - Arkansas, Delaware, Hawaii
No girls - Arkansas, Delaware, Idaho, Louisiana, West Virginia
Not anymore. Tori Starcher of Ripley, WV got second to Rebecca Story this year.

I’m pretty sure Lexy Halladay could qualify for Footlocker if she wanted to...

Indiana moved to a 5k for girls around 2007. One class for all Indiana schools.

About half the states in the country have girls run 2.5 miles. You don't get out much do you.
You must not get out much either. Only one state does a 4K and it’s a class only the small schools in Texas.
I have a friend who was Vermont state champion.
Lexy Halladay just doesn’t wrote:

That list is inaccurate/outdated. Idaho has already had a couple girls qualify.
Also, Delaware has had a few All-Americans, but they all chose NXN I believe...

Note: This is an old thread, you are probably responding to a post from prior to Indiana's move to 5k.
