The 1984 LA olympic womens 3000 m final. The accidental tripping incident, Mary Slaney went down on the track & couldn't continue, her chance for olympic gold gone! She later on publicly blamed Zola Budd for it for illegally cutting her off.

What I was saying was the press chose the wrong moment to interview her. They should have given her some time, but you know media hype.

May or may not have a lot to do with this thread's central theme.

Media hype? Maybe they had a deadline? Maybe people who weren't there wanted to know what happened? Maybe the journalists were doing their job? Maybe television viewers wouldn't want to wait a few hours? Maybe you'll tell us all, exactly, the correct time to interview someone? I'd said it's as soon as possible.

So maybe you're just an ignorant ass?

Three come to mind - all on the high school level. None during a race.

#1. When I was in high school a kid was bitten by a dog during the 800M. It was a good sized invitational meet. The father wanted the race rerun and wouldn't get out of the meet director's face. You could see the meet director's face get redder and redder. He finally went after trhe parent but got pulled off before he did any damage. He would've killed the guy.

#2. When I was coaching an indoor meet twenty years ago a kid came running up to me to tell me there was a fight outside. I got outside and one of my kids was squared off against a known hothead from another team. My kid still likes to tell the story of the flying tackle I put on the other kid. Plus, even though I had to throw him off the team I hired him to coach for us for a few years. The guy I tackled? He ended up coaching another team in the league and we became pretty good friends (when we weren't battling each other).

#3. I had a brother to brother handoff go bad in the 4X1 during our league championship. No big deal - we already had the meet won. But the next thing you know the two of them are rolling around on the infield throwing punches. They were arguing over who's fault it was.

Please accept my profound apologies for my unfortunate upsetting of your day. I have never worked as a journalist so I believe I do indeed qualify as an ignorant ass even though you do not need to vent your frustrations by publically calling me one.

I will be more careful of what I say on here in the future...my previous post was bringing a previous contributer, one named 'Talking to himself' up to speed on what so infortunately transpired in the LA Olys. Womens 3000 m track final....

Or are you upset as our Canadian runner, Lynn Williams got 3rd. I seem to recall in that race..? :)

There is something to the bio-chemical reactions in the brain during a race. I'm normally an easy going guy. But at the 2001 Ocean State Marathon a friend knowing I always started too fast convinced me to go out with a female teamate the first half then take off on my own the second half, he gauranteed that if I did this I would qualify for Boston.

We averaged a 7 pace til the half high fived eachother and I was off. For some reason I said to myself "no one is going to pass me from here on out"! From that point on every time some one pulled up beside me like they were going to pass I freaked on them,saying "Come on! You wan't a peice of me M@#%@# F@#$@%!" each time the other runner would back off the roadside fans loved it screaming at us to go for it! End result no one passed me I qaulified for Boston 3:10 and change.

I was under a lot of personal stress at the time and think it just came out in the race. It's never happened since,thank God!

From Canadian XC folklore:

The best fight story I ever heard involved Paul McCloy (aka The Newf). In the version I was told, The Newf was running the Canadian XC champs and was in a battle with an American who had entered for some reason. During the race, there was some bumping and elbowing (those who have seen Paul run will not be surprised at this) and some words exchanged.

Over the last few hundred metres, The Newf kicked away to win, and then turned around in the chute to wait for the American. When he arrived, The Newf grabbed him in a headlock and started pounding him right there.

As I said, this is third hand, so if anyone can clarify the details, I'd appreciate it.

Kenny Moore told me about the Quantico Race as a comic anecdote. Why is it so bizarre that a generally peaceable fellow might get so riled up that he wants to punch someone out? (He didn't do it, by the way.0

As for the question regarding the connection between biochemistry and violence... hello? I can't cite subject and verse, but this is a no-brainer.

Chapter and verse, I meant. My mistake -- must be something happening to my biochemistry. (It's called Vodka & Pineapple Juice, and a beautiful view of the Hudson River.)

Never heard anything like that about Paul McCloy, never even knew he was nicknamed 'The Newf'. Yes he was a great international runner for canada despite his somewhat unorthodox running style (not that running style means a hill of beans!) and still is apparently running well in his masters cat.

If you've never heard Paulie called "The Newf", then you just haven't been around, Howie.

The word "legend" doesn't even start to come close to describing the phenom known as The Paul McCloy. So many stories, so many memories, where do you start ...

A famous kenyan runner in the the 90s called Machuka punched Haile Gebrselassie at the finish of a race in europe for failing to take the lead in a 10000m race and he was suspended

i remember when wejo and rojo went at it after a race when they were kids in high school because one of them eat up all the peanut butter when they got home.

I was at that race. A great finish.

I heard that Lunn said that he was going to outkick Andrews (3:41 runner) and there wasnt anything Andrews could do to outkick Lunn. Andrews jokingly said he would come up with something clever...

The race was taped on Fox Sports NW and the announcers said, 'now with these two middle-distance runners going at at, we could make some Pay Per View off of that'

Lunn went on to become was of the US best milers and last I heard, Andrews owns a real estate company in Portland Oregon.
