We merged two Mary Cain threads into 1. The 2nd one was entitled, "Update: Mary Cain makes another sexual allegation - Alberto Salazar looked at her exposed breasts while she was sleeping"
How does Hasay figure into this? What is the deal with their relationship?
Was probably unfair for me to lump Hasay in with Salazar and Treasure who are real abusers. But Hasay's actions as Mary describes them did cross a line with me.
I'll start by saying I think Mary had unrealistic expectations for her competitors and NOP training partners. She wanted them to be always warm and cheerful towards her. At competitions when everyone is in it for themselves, I think the most you can expect is politeness.
Mary accused teammates like Shannon Rowbury for example for being petty and manipulative, especially during workouts. But IDK, Shannon might have her own side of the story.
But Mary says Jordan actually made comments towards her that were needlessly mean spirited. It's okay to ignore Mary or not be warm towards her. It's not okay to make rude and snide comments to a high schooler when you are a college graduate.
Jordan would make fun of Mary for being fat. She also made fun of her hair, saying things like how she worried about going to Oregon because she worried her hair would become dark like Mary's, and called her hair "thick and unruly". She also made really underhanded comments about Mary's dedication or work ethic, that felt uncalled for. It was gross to read about a 22 year old treating a 17 year old like that. There was no need for it.
I don't know if some girls talk smack with peers and friends the way guys do. All that stuff reads that way to me, if im looking at it from the perspective of guys saying it to each other. My boys, who are all best friends, constantly talk trash to each other like that.
of course, you have to read the room and know who to do that with. but then, somebody could give off a vibe like they're playing along, while they're really feeling gutted

Wait until you read the comments that anonymous 40-year-old men make about 17-year-olds (and younger) on this message board that don't get deleted. Not excusing anything that Hasay (allegedly) said, but come on, you're on the LetsRun message board. A person must have some thick skin to read it.

I don’t buy for even one second that Jordan said any of those things. As a reader, you have to remember the nature and character of narrator, who in this case has made a habit of stepping on everyone around her to raise herself onto a false pedestal.

I love gossip and drama in the running world as much as anyone, but I can't fathom what she was thinking putting names to these stories. Did no one advise her against this? It's tacky, immature, and makes her look like a complete basket case.

It’s receiving good reviews so it’s appealing to whatever her market is.
Often times, I think how lucky it is to never have been great. There is never the fall from greatness.
I’m not sure if hope she is making things up, seeking attention…::therefore not abused. It appears to be be a bunch of collateral damage to stay relevant and make a buck. If so, shame on her. If not, shame on to whomever abused her

Well, I suspect that there's a bit of selection bias in who chooses to read a book like this. But some are certainly critical: Below is an except from a female reviewer on Goodreads:
"I guess I’m not in line with most of the reviews of Mary Cain’s book. After I read the book, I was taken aback by both the quality of the writing and the overall tone. While “mean” may not be the perfect word, the book often felt mean and more like a diary of a disgruntled, immature young person than a thoughtful memoir. It reads as a chronological list of grievances against nearly everyone she believes wronged her. I found myself repeatedly putting the book down and wondering how it came to be published in this form. Throughout the book, it seemed to lack a larger purpose beyond tearing others down. For me, this was a disappointing read."

The same market who purchased Newsome’s book, the publisher.

reviews....
Books about how "I'm a massive victim because of my gender/race/religion" basically never receive poor reviews. The reviewer would be cancelled and never given a review to write again. It makes everyone's life easier to just say 'oh what a poor thing she is so brave to open up and reveal the rot in society' and say it's good.
Mary's attitude and pattern of behavior is very toxic not just for others but FOR HER. She's highly rewarded (financially and emotionally) every time she trots out a victim narrative. So she chases the high of doing it again and again. But the problem for her is that this has become her only view of success.
How is she going to go and actually achieve, being a bad@ss doctor, dealing with extremely difficult and stressful scenarios daily, when her default is "I am owed by others and I only succeed when I am a victim of others". Who wants to hire such a person? Who wants to trust such a person as their doctor? She is a liability wherever she ends up. And she doesn't even realize that she is self sabotaging.
Bro, she may be going to med school; but she’ll never do a residency or see a patient in her entire career. She’s using it as a parlay into “biomedical ethics and medical humanities”. Complete waste of a spot in the class.
Well, now there are government agencies (e.g., in Canada) recommending assisted suicide rather than medical treatment; children have been euthanized (e. g., in Belgium and Netherlands), a 56-year old woman in the UK is seeking assisted suicide because she cannot bear the death of her son, "transmedicine," administrations in the USA trying to compel, e.g., the Little Sisters of the Poor to provide insurance for direct abortion and artificial birth control drugs and devices. If, in so many cases, health care has lost its mission or if governments are over- or under-reaching, I suspect it may not be a "[c]omplete waste of a spot in the class."

Terrible look for the Hogans and their coaching business. I get that no one likes Mary but if these statements are true they are trashed. Mary makes it sound like Jordan is the spawn of Alberto. Training plans with a side of weight shaming and thyroid meds. I assume the Hogans are pursuing legal action.
Agree. Plus, if someone thinks sports are difficult just wait for Residency in Medicine. She is not ready for this. And most probably she will bail out for some other form of Medicine. Like research etc.
The track prodigy made it to world championships at 17 and joined Nike’s Oregon Project. At 29, Cain is detailing the hellish years under coach Alberto Salazar in her new memoir

I remember seeing a video of the NOP team doing a hard workout after a meet and they were all down to business knocking out the repeats. Mary sat on the side of the track and put on a "show" about it hurting so bad, and not wanting to do the last one. Everyone just ignored her and got back on the track. That microcosm of an interaction revealed a broader issue that she was WAAAYYYYYY too immature to be running with a professional team. She appears to be a case of arrested development where peoples' maturity level stays locked at the age when they get famous, which in her case was quite young. I can only imagine how annoying she must have been at times - she was used to being catered to and no one seemed to have the patience for it anymore because they had their own work/career to manage.
How is she going to get along with her Residency PEERS and SUPERIORS? Women doctors have it tough enough without having tons of traumatic baggage going back to HS.
She won’t! MC isn’t even taking her step 1 exam to move on to clinical yr. She’ll take 7 yrs to do 4 and then just tour speaking on the female triad, claiming MD status with no license or residency.
I was so happy to see her move on but just when we thought she was gone, here she comes back to haunt us.
I’m not reading the book but did she slander Hasay?
Yes - I was wondering what type of doctor she is training to become or hoping to become. A medical doctor or something else? Ethics is very specialised and I don't know about the situation in the US, but I'm not entirely sure that there's a large amount of job opportunities in that area compared to say a regular doctor. I had thought she was training to be an MD in a hospital or a GP (family practice). I'd like to know.
I wish her success in whatever she does. Hopefully she can forget about her running experiences and move on from that chapter in her life and shut the door on it. It seems for the best rather than raking it up over and over again which isn't healthy at all really.
