Are you going to argue that starting as a triathlete helps becoming a distance runner? If it were so we would surely see it incorporated in distance training.
Being a talented athlete generally shows early in life through an engagement in sports but the sport concerned doesn't particularly matter until an athlete at least enters their teens. (That said, it can help to participate in ball sports earlier, to train hand-eye coordination.)
