The household income of my spouse and I is around $1 million. We're in our early 30s and live in the bay area, so it's not very cheap. We've been diligent about saving because we're planning to try for kids this year, I imagine our expenses will go up a lot with kids. Any suggestions on what we can do / buy to make having kids easier?
Something we did not intentionally at first was we moved to a rural area 30 years ago. I am in my mid 50s. Because housing was cheaper we sent our kids to top private schools for high school (new England boarding school) which in the long run was better than overpaying for some suburb just to get good schools and end up more house poor. I see a lot of young people paying to live in some zip code just for the schools, and then having high housing and keeping up with the joneses costs from living packed in with a bunch of people trying to one up each other with wealth. Our town is mixed, there are everything from truck drivers to drs, consultants, tech bros, police officers, etc essentially all living near each other so there is no rat race. It’s allowed us to amass a very nice mid 7 figure net worth on 300k in income.
