1) Dan Wetzel is one of the most prominent NCAA writes in the country. Him writing on this is a big deal. I was shocked to see it was him who wrote this.
2) The NCAA system where a school can take a small nothing penalty and then a coach is really damaged doesn't seem like the right system. Can Brosnan coach in the NCAA now?
3) If the NCAA rule is "you can't talk to anyone no matter what, even if you had an existing relationship" seems absurd. If Brosnan has to cut off contact with friends or can't event tell them "hey you need to talk to me about transferring once she's in the portal " the rule isn't a good one.
The article says this: "Brosnan coached both Samantha McDonnell and her older brother at Newberry Park and had become close friends with their parents, particularly father Todd. The dads hung out together, surfed together and often texted and talked on the phone. The families even shared holidays."
4) But big picture if : a) there was a preexisting relationship b) the parents did confirm Brosnan said he couldn't talk to them about coming unless they were in the portal and c) the athletes came to UCLA and didn't get any scholarship then this whole thing seems nuts to me.
What am I missing?
Man, this whole case is straight-up disturbing. Too many lies, too many people spinning garbage, and the NCAA just runs with it like it’s real. That’s the part that blows my mind they didn’t have evidence, so they started stretching stories, twisting friendships into “tampering,” and acting like normal human conversations are violations. When you’ve gotta make stuff up to justify a punishment, that’s not an investigation that’s desperation. And anyone watching this unfold can see it. The whole thing is shady, sloppy, and honestly embarrassing for an organization that already has a reputation for being a mess.
During prospect 2’s interview with the enforcement staff, she recalled her father telling her about one of the calls he had with Brosnan in which Brosnan expressed that he would love to have prospect 2 at UCLA. Following her entry in the transfer portal January 2, 2023, prospect 2 enrolled at UCLA and competed for the institution. Prospect 1 entered the transfer portal on December 12, 2022, and prospect 2 entered on January 2, 2023. Two of Brosnan’s 11 phone calls with prospect 1’s father occurred at 10:25 p.m. and 11:07 p.m. on December 11, 2022, the night before prospect 1 entered the portal. Prospect 1’s father initiated both calls. Brosnan then initiated a phone call to prospect 1’s father the following day. The call concluded 13 minutes before prospect 1 entered the portal. Prospect 1’s father then called Brosnan three minutes after prospect 1 entered the portal. That’s the reality of why he was not innocent.

This is how every Brosnan thread goes - a bunch of different usernames all post the SAME EXACT things, same exact phrases, insults the NCAA, same exact lies.
Usually any post stating the facts about the investigation are deleted, so at least it is good that Wejo is here to prevent those posts from being deleted.
Thread has been much quieter the past 5-6 hours. Did Sean finally call it a night and decide to get some shut-eye?
I think Jack Ruby woke up
A lot of these posts look like they’re coming from the same person using different accounts, and honestly, it’s getting weird. You can hide behind burner usernames or a VPN, posting still exposes your devices. Most people don’t know that. but that doesn’t change the fact that the stuff being posted is unhinged and has nothing to do with the actual evidence. Anyone reading the case or even the ESPN article knows the narrative some of you keep pushing is pure fiction. If anything, it just shows someone out there has deeper personal issues they’re trying to project onto this thread. Enough already. We don’t care if you dislike Brosnan. This case is not about your hate. Time move on!
The NCAA’s handling of this case reflects a procedurally defective process that violated its own bylaws and basic administrative-law standards. The negotiated resolution with UCLA prejudiced the outcome from the outset, the evidence fails to meet the NCAA’s required threshold, and the Committee’s composition deprived Brosnan of an impartial hearing. These defects render the finding legally unsustainable.
Man, this “Jack” guy is on another level of obsessed. Every Brosnan thread turns into the same copy-paste misinformation dump from him. It’s like a broken record at this point. None of it matches the actual case file, none of it matches the NCAA’s own admissions, and it definitely doesn’t match what ESPN reported after reviewing the evidence. When even national media sees the flaws in the NCAA’s process, maybe it’s time for Jack to stop pretending he knows more than everyone else and move on. This case doesn’t involve him, and his made-up narratives don’t change the facts.

Thank you and I agree. Jack Ruby this isn’t about you. You’ve said the same thing over and over, and at this point it’s just derailing the discussion. The ESPN article lays out facts that don’t match the version you keep pushing, and people are reacting to that, not to you. No one here needs you to police the thread or repeat the same accusations. Read the article, accept that other people can see the flaws in the NCAA process, and then move on. This case isn’t your personal crusade, it’s bigger than that, and the conversation should reflect what’s actually in the evidence, not whatever narrative you’re trying to force. Please get a life!

You actually can’t hide behind a VPN the way you think. A VPN only masks the public-facing IP address, it does not anonymize the device, the browser fingerprint. Any moron posting is technically still exposed. The brojos know this, but most small minded posters do not.

Don't say that Jack Ruby just pissed his pants and locked his door.

That’s why these threads always get the same made-up “facts” from the same few people who think a new handle = a new identity. And correct using a VPN doesn’t hide anyone to be identified. Meanwhile, Brosnan literally posted this ESPN article on his own Instagram and X. He’s not hiding. The only people hiding are the ones spreading misinformation instead of engaging with the actual content, which is ESPN calling out the NCAA’s hypocrisy and broken process. So if you’re that invested, here’s a thought: DM him directly instead of derailing a thread about a national-level article exposing the NCAA’s mess. And again, for the slow learners a VPN won’t save you. You can be traced, and it’s not hard.
Honestly, it was just cool to see Dan Wetzel of all people write a full story about a cross country coach. You never see national writers touch anything in our sport unless it’s Olympics level news. The fact that he dove into the details, actually read the case, and straight-up called out the NCAA’s mess just made it even better. XC and track almost never get mainstream coverage, so seeing someone that big highlight the hypocrisy was pretty awesome.

Oh man, I am absolutely losing my mind right now—Sean Brosnan has been fully cleared by the NCAA of those bogus tampering allegations, and it's like the running gods have finally smiled on us! No more grinding away coaching that Skechers and Diadora pro squad up in Big Bear; instead, my hero is fielding calls from powerhouse colleges left and right, all begging for his renegade genius to transform their programs. The gossip mill's buzzing that he's got a real soft spot for a return to the East Coast—whispers of Syracuse or even a shot at Rutgers have insiders salivating—but with his name sparkling clean, every D1 dream team from Oregon to Villanova would roll out the red carpet. Coach B is back, baby, and the distance world is about to get revolutionized all over again!
2) By the letter of the law, Brosnan probably broke some of the absurd laws but there may n ot be proof of it.
3) A lot of coaches were IRATE with Brosnan. There seem to be three things established coaches hate more than anything, i) young guns that talk big ii) negative recruiting or iii) any sort of tampering.
This alleged tampering seems quaint by the new modern standards but remember a lot has changed quickly.
Think about, people are upset that a college coach talked to the dad of a cross country runner whom he'd known for year sthe night before she entered the portal when he didn't even offer her a scholarship. Meanwhile, the LSU governor has been openly offering Lane Kiffin $13 million for the last month. We as fans are expected to accept the latter but be outraged about the former?
If I was still in college coaching and my great friend Chris Lear called me up about his daughter transferring, I'd definitely say, "Hey man. I can't officially talk about this until you guys enter the portal. But hyopothetically speaking, we'd love to have someone of xx credentials (similar to their stats) and we have the ability to get them into the school. That's all I can say now"

You are making a lot of assumptions of how things went down based on Brosnan and the dad’s word. How many people, when in trouble, tell the real truth?
On top of that, as well documented, Brosnan’s word may not be all that valuable. You may be a friend of his and want to believe him, but look back his history when he jumped on the scene, telling the parents at NP, putting it in his bio on his team’s website and saying it in several interviews that he was a 9 time all american at Adam’s st. His record of truthfulness is not one i would put much stock in.
Go ahead and delete this, even though everything I stated is 100% true. That’s how this site treats Sean vs the other coaches that are consistently slammed.

Sean is guilty of all three of the things you’ve mentioned. Let’s not forget, he was telling kids on the team those three were coming to UCLA long before all the portal stuff came n the investigation happened. Don’t be naive. He was talking to those parents and kids for a long time. Sean can not keep his trap shut which is one if his biggest downfalls. Had he not been bragging about them coming and had he waited a week or so while they were in the portal, none of this would be an issue.

Rojo agrees Brosnan broke NCAA rules!!!!
The rules are not absurd, they are there to protect the athletes. Nobody wants coaches to be allowed to harass parents trying to get their children to transfer when those athlete may not even have expressed an interest to transfer.
If you allow exceptions or any grey areas, they are manipulated and abused. These rules have been strongly enforced for as long as the NCAA has existed.
The daughter actually even admitted the calls were about recruiting. There is proof:
"During prospect 2’s interview with the enforcement staff, she recalled her father telling her about one of the calls he had with Brosnan in which Brosnan expressed that he would love to have prospect 2 at UCLA."
In Rojo's hypothetical conversation with Lear, he is very careful to NOT say anything about whether he'd love to have the daughter on the team. And Rojo was a college coach so this is very clear evidence that all college coaches know the rules. This shows that Brosnan's conversations crossed the boundary of what is allowed and is proven evidence of tampering.
