She’s too fast to pull teammates. Anyone that tried to keep up with her would crash and burn. You’re suggesting she would give up a chance for an individual for a team title but no one has ever done that in NCAA XC history. Her winning the race will bring more attention to BYU than a team title.
Umm... Tuohy in 2022. She could have stayed with Valby from the start, but chose to pull her teammates instead.
In 2017 Grant Fisher basically punted on the individual title to run a more conservative race and help Stanford's podium hopes. He finished in 5th and Stanford podiumed. He was supposed to be the guy up front battling it out with Justyn Knight that year, like they did at Nuttycomb.
Doris' sub-9 SC puts her amount the top 10 ever; that's who we are asking a freshman to beat. With that said, I don't see Jane finishing no worse than 4th and second would not surprise me. I think Jane is as phenomenal as everyone else thinks she is, but Doris is too much of a mountain to climb.
Valby did not "come back." She ran an even pace. Tuohy ran a huge negative split to hunt her down. (She ran 3:17/km for the first 4k and then 3:09/km for the last 2k.) It would have been so much easier if she had run even.
And the "pacer" usually stays ahead of runners they are trying to pace. You don't pace others from behind.
Tuohy was pacing about 20 runners so how could she specifically helping any teammates? I skimmed through the video and most time the NC State runners couldn’t even see each other. Whether Valby ran an even pace or not, Tuohy’s strategy worked well. Having a teammate in the pack doesn’t make it any easier to keep up.
It wasn't about helping by drafting or seeing each other, it was about keeping the main pack together for as long as possible.
There was a big debate on these boards prior to that race as to what Touhy's strategy would be. Everyone acknowledged that the best tactic for Touhy would obviously be to attempt to sit on Valby and then try to outkick her, given the relative strengths of the two athletes. But if she did that too early, the whole pack may have blown apart, and NC State wanted to maintain a controlled pack for as long as possible. Note that after the race, runners from other teams confirmed this competitive dynamic in interviews: they indicated that their strategy going in was to ignore Valby and key off Touhy.
So Touhy let Valby go, the main pack stuck with Touhy, and she did her job to keep the pack together for as long as possible. This definitely hurt her chances for the individual title-- going in it was pretty much a toss up as to who might win in an even match, so waiting to chase Valby down was a significant risk that Touhy made to benefit the team. It was definitely not a given that Touhy could catch her.
At some point in the race, Touhy heard what the size of the gap was from the sidelines, and she made the in-the-race decision that she had kept things together long enough and had to start hunting Valby down.
That she successfully pulled it off doesn't diminish the fact that the entire strategy was designed to put the team first, while still preserving at least some chance for Touhy to win the individual title.
2003. Ryan Hall ran to win the team race not to win the individual race. On that day, I believe he would have beaten Ritz if he had gone out harder. His team running allowed Stanford to put up one of the best ncaa xc results ever. Stanford 24 Wisconsin 174.
Hall staying with his teammates didn’t make any difference in that race and if he had won the race instead, his teammates would been stoked for him. If it was you, would you expect a teammate with the ability to win, to hang back with you? Seems kind of selfish to me. Instead of wanting him to slow down for you, maybe you could aspire to improve to run his normal pace.
Ritz only beat Hall by about a second. (look at the names in the top 20!)
Hall was a headcase. His coach knew this and probably had him focus on the team title so he wouldn't implode from the expectations of being individual champion, but he might have been able to win it on the day.

I'm not asking her to beat anyone, but I'll enjoy watching her make a mockery of NCAA XC. That steeple is getting overhyped, it is a weak event. Coburn has a gold, Freirichs has a faster time than Doris. Jane's mile and 5K times from HS would be NCAA records up until the last couple years, but the key here is she has made a JUMP since the spring. These 2 cross races are absurd. She makes 19 mins look like hobby jogging and she hasn't been pushed. There's more in that tank.
She didn't "pull" her teammates... Katelyn was PACING HERSELF. Parker was running wide, and Katelyn was conserving energy until the end. Then striked. Parker ended up being far superior to Katelyn senior year. She is injured A LOT though
Unfortunately, Florida, New Mexico, Alabama CHEAT by calling 1-800-Kenya to recruit Africans to their team. These women look to be 22 and up. Do they even go to class, take tests, take finals? It's CHEATING. Because of this African CHEATING, I'm predicting that Jane will be the 2nd or 3rd WHITE woman, and will finish maybe 6th-11th. If there were no Africans, I would place her 2nd-4th. She is the High School GOAT by far! Blew away all of Mary Cain and Katelyn Tuohy's records. What happened to BYU"s Jenna Hutchins. She is constantly injured. Shouldn't Jenna be a senior now too. Sus.
He's balding and looks to be about 33. Another African cheat. The WORST African cheat ever at the High School level was Edward Cheserek. My friend saw him run in person when he was in HS, and said he looked to be 24. Fake birth certificates. CHEATERS.

The African women tend to be more age appropriate, usually no more than 19 or 20 incoming freshmen.
Umm... Tuohy in 2022. She could have stayed with Valby from the start, but chose to pull her teammates instead.
Tuohy did win the race and was correct in thinking Valby would comeback. Until she broke away, she ran at the front of the chase pack and was not pacing any teammates.
Tuohy's victory in the race highlights her strong performance and strategic thinking. Her belief that Valby would make a comeback indicates her awareness of Valby's capabilities, which adds an interesting dynamic to the competition. Running at the front of the chase pack without pacing any teammates suggests that Tuohy was focused on her own race strategy rather than relying on others, showcasing her independence and confidence. What do you think were the key moments in the race that allowed Tuohy to break away from the chase pack and secure her victory?

Wasn't the elliptical supposed to prevent that? How do you get injured - "a lot" - on less than 30mpw?

As I pointed out, and got downvoted, 3 out of 4 Indoor seasons....maybe stay away from those tight turns
