Olli Hoare doesn't make Australia 1500 team

How could you possibly know that Olli was told he needed to prove fitness? Do you work for Athletics Australia or are best buds with Olli? I don't disagree that he probably felt like he needed to show some good form after a couple of tough races, but wild assumptions without showing any evidence isn't helping the discussion here

Why would a 3:31.15 for 9th in early June lock a selection?

All fair, to be clear I don't like the AA selection policy and I don't think it puts athletes in a good position. And of course it's absurd that a coach/agent wouldn't recuse themselves from it because obviously they wouldn't be impartial. You're right that SWM wasn't a disaster...the tough part is as you note it wasn't good enough to show that he was in form good enough to be better than Jude Thomas or Adam Spencer. I'd agree it's a bad process that he then has to go to find a race to show that hey you know that wasn't my best day...I can run 3:31-2/3:48-9 and look good doing it etc. If I had to second guess, I'd say he should've run a low-key time trial type race (and run conservatively!) instead of another DL in Silesia where he'd have to be wary of getting his doors blown off. This is of course Monday Morning QBing. But fair or not and the process certainly isn't, I just think if Olli WAS running well, he wouldn't have had this issue. Or if he'd beaten Adam Spencer to land the second spot, which against is symptomatic of not running too well. Spencer is solid, but no world-beater. He just didn't have a good season, and while not every race was really bad, the general trajectory makes this on merit not a horrible decision.

I think we’re reading into this , I’ve never seen a group of runners in the OAC give a care about any of this stuff. I mean they’ll be on the podcast next week talking about how it was a great year and how their coach is the best and everything is awesome. I mean if I was wearing a $79 sweatshirt I wouldn’t complain either. problem is we all know about 4 to 6 guys that would give their left nut to be on a pro team like OAC and these guys seem to not even care one season after the next.

Keely ran 1:54 on August 16. She was plenty fit to do just fine at the British Trials on August 3rd. If you aren't fit enough to make a team in smaller country 6 weeks before Worlds, you aren't going to medal at Worlds anyway.

Well now Rojo has said it, and is it really at all implausible? It seems hardly coincidental that the two guys jockeying for the last spot (and both with the standard) are racing frequently in races where most athletes are chasing qualifying times/points, or playing out the string (Ciattei). The federation puts them in a really hard spot, but would we prefer they 100% follow the Trials from April, go solely on time like Ethiopia (nope), or just go with the guy running better in late July/August (what they did). Probably the answer is more transparent criteria for how form is measured in the late season, which athletes can prepare for. Have the athletes duke it out in the same race? Even better.

Do you also think that Clayton Young needs to leave his setup to beat Connor Mantz?

If the selectors were applying the published selection criteria then the onus should have been on Spencer and Thomas to run faster than 3:31, not Olli "prove his fitness". It was a very similar situation last year between McSweyn & Myers. McSweyn got the nod even though Myers was in superior recent form. This year they've gone the other way and it seems that runners with a certain manager always get the close calls.

This is the only correct comment in this whole thread. People are here debating various races and times but it ultimately comes down to this and that's the reason Spencer and Thomas got the nod over Hoare.

If Ollie was managed by Collis/NB, and one of the others wasn't, Ollie would be on the team.

Nah, you're entirely wrong. I'm sure she could have run, but why risk your gold medal hope and have them run a race before their support team says they are ready? You say she was ready, but the multi-medal winning coaches of Keely Hodgkinson said she wasn't, and in a toss-up, I'm going with Painter and Meadows over the podcast contributor. And again, the drop off from Keely to Abigail Ives (third place at the champs) is steep - going from a gold medal to someone who doesn't get out of the heats.

even if Olli Hoare was being "mocked" who cares? bro runs a podcast talking about the scandals of track and field and constantly makes fun of and talks sh*t about runners he does not like, kerr included. imagine kerr put out a post asking olli to be kinder and to please stop being mean? in my opinion if you're going to have a podcast of that nature you should have thicker skin. and you should probably back it with your performances. so Olli has not been running as well this year, and he didn't get selected to represent in world champs. sure politics might be playing a role and that sucks, but if he was running well enough there would be no discussion. i just dont feel bad for him, it is what it is

Hoare and Klecker should invest in a sports psychologist. They seem to have the same issue once their confidence is dinged, they suffer under pressure and competition. It seems like they believe they are better than the results show and maybe they are. The issue seems to be once they aren't the top person in their training group or get slightly gapped in a race, they fall way back.

Well then it’s a slight variation on the Ethiopian system of time-chasing, which everyone hates. Also you’re missing the fact that Spencer beat Olli at Aussie Champs. Running 3:31.1 was good but the results outside of that did not justify Hoare leapfrogging Spencer. While the politics stink, you seem to be ignore that McSweyn did beat Myers by a full second in the last race before Paris (London DL), and ran 7:29 for 3K in Paris DL. Are you so sure Myers was running better? I’d agree they should’ve pushed McSweyn to do the 5K only.

McSweyn in the 5K? He's still at the back just in a longer race.
