Increased mileage really changed the game for me. Once I stayed consistent and slowly built up my weekly miles, my endurance, recovery, and overall speed improved way more than I expected. Love reading this thread, and my goodness you could be my twin. Your times and mileage are basically spot on with me if not just a touch fast. I'm at 16:10 (track), 34:0x (road), 72:xx half off 90 mph, looking to crack 34 (finally) on the roads this weekend (!). Your post gives me hope I can crack 2:30 for the 'thon when I get a bit older and progressively up my mileage. I definitely want to get up to the big boy numbers (100+) in a few years, and I have been steadily upping my peak mileage by 5 every year so I can adapt, which has been working thankfully!
To the original poster, I went from 74:xx on 80 mpw to 72:xx on 90 mpw in the half, so mileage really works when done correctly! You've got to up your mileage in such a way that it almost feels too easy. I remember in high school I touched 60 miles for a week and thought I was running A LOT. Now (23yo), a morning 10 miler with some speed work thrown in feels like I haven't done anything for that day.
