We merged two threads on the same topic and kept the one started by Rojo as Rojo's was started first and its his website. The 2nd thread was titled, "Random Swede runs 12:44 to smack the Africans and set new European record!?"
My god that was impressive. Final 2+ k all by himself leading it all. Not nearly as good conditions as Oslo as it was warmer and windier.
Hocker got dropped about 5 minutes in.

I try not to tell people how to post or what to say but please stop using GOD so freely to emphasize whatever statement you wish to iterate.
You people are so intolerable. Look, it's simple: it's YOUR religion. You do whatever silly thing you do, but don't go around claiming respect for it, and expecting other people to adhere to your religion. You are free to do/believe/say what you want, you are not free from people thinking it's stupid or just not caring about it. Whether you like it or not, the word 'god' has found a place in our language, and that's only because of you people pushing region on to society. Now deal with it.
the theory that no one can compete with africans in middle long D, doesn't hold much water these days.
the 800 is a racial salad, one of these days a random asian will join the mix.
The theory has never existed for mid-distance unless Jim Ryun, John Walker, Herb Elliott, Sebastian Coe, Rodal, Cram, Centrowitz et al were Africans secretly.
For distance yes Westerners are smashing the old standard for the 5,000-10,000. The marathon/half marathon will be interesting as rarely the best athletes go there in their prime unlike Africans. Mantz and Cairess are encouraging but I’m not sure the depth will ever be like this.
We would certainly see a Western athlete hit 2:03 if a top tier talent went to the roads in their prime. Mantz and Cairess are A- tier talents and they're both competitive in the marathon. If Nico Young hit the roads next year, I'd place good money on him running 2:03 within a couple of years. Fisher might be a bit too old after 2028 to hit a really fast time, but it also wouldn't surprise me.
he's hardly random. he already has a European Record (10k road). fast time trialist with decent range (1:45 800, 59:23 HM) but he's just not good at tactical/championship races so most ppl don't know about him.
Not random. I thought rojo knew Athletics n particularly running. He has been a top euro guy for years. Was just bad tactics that robbed him of gold in the euros last year n injury stopped him from the Olympics where he probably would have medalled in the 10k.
There are breakthrough performances occurring all through the sport today - at all distances, from different nationalities, men and women, and different ages. I doubt the common factor is shoes or revolutionary training methods.

Yes, the guy who medaled at the World junior champs truly showed up out of nowhere

That isnt what is being said. But the world junior champs don't say much about a European record. His 12:44 is a breakthrough or it wouldn't have been seen as deserving several threads - as it has.

Do you know anything about his training? How he changed it? You don't. Doping, doping, doping. You don't know anything else.

I agree, and Mantz might do it. I think you are underestimating his talent a wee bit . I think he could run 26:4x right now (better than Cairess) and HM is his best distance. I hope he races the 10K at Pre. That being said 2:01-2:02 requires A-level talent and I think we agree these guys (Nico/Grant) are staying on the track maybe too long.

His breakthrough came several seasons ago when he ran sub 27 at the Ten. It's only a surprise to people like you who don't follow the sport that someone who runs sub 27 on both the road and track, holds the European 10k record on the roads, and is the second fastest European in history in the HM and third fastest European in history in the road 5k is capable of running a fast 5000 on the track.

Let me guess...it's doping is it?
So then, why is Almgren running 9 seconds faster than Mo Farah ever did? Did doping not exist back then?
Or let me guess, there was doping in 2011, but now there's EVEN MORE doping. All improvements are about more and better doping, nothing else ever matters, even though you've been saying the exact same thing for years and years. Somehow there are continued and massive improvements in illegal doping but no significant improvements in talent, training, legal supplements, tracks, OR shoes.

Fernando Mamede-esque.
Good time trial runner.
Mamede was a sprinter that by a miracle managed to run distance and very well.
He did not recover as well as the rest, probably as a result.
After dominating heats he never ran well.
Same as Rupp, he did not run 5k well after 10k when he was absolutely maxed out. In a cake walk 10k, the 5k was fine.
And Asafa Powel also.
I think that it is a thing. a talent, a shorter or longer recovery time.

I'd say "decent" is a strong understatement for his incredible range. I challenge you to name one person with a better range (Sifan Hassan is the only person I can come up with)
