I suspect that this injury is not nearly as severe as the one that knocked out his winter last year. Jakob can be daring and foolhardy, but he is not an idiot. He will have gained a lot of experience on dealing with injury, and I'm guessing he's being very proactive this time around.
I think it's most likely that he felt a bit of pain and decided to take some time off and get aggressive with rehab, which pushes his season opener back by a few weeks.
Either way, I hope he recovers soon. it would be a shame to waste such a successful winter of training.
Maybe he should stop chasing those pointless indoor titles and records
Hocker, Kerr, Nuguse, Kessler: 4 of the top 5 in the men’s 1500m final at the Paris 2024 Olympics participated and medaled at the "pointless" indoor World Championships in Glasgow. The only absent at last year’s indoor WC was actually Ingebrigtsen as he was still recovering from injury.
And Hocker was by far the athlete who had the highest number of races in 2024 before the Olympics.

There’s a strange notion that blames injuries that seemingly occur out of competition periods on races weeks or months earlier.
Jakobs injury last year was in winter training correct? This one is after he stopped racing indoors. Kerr injured himself in the winter this year (the hip). Perhaps these guys just don’t back off like they do when they have races/travel.
Let the record show that Jakob has never won an outdoor global championship 1500 without his father coaching him.
I don’t want to diminish what Jakob has achieved under his father’s coaching, but this is a very lame comment. Here’s a count of Jakob global championships medals:
With his father coaching him: 1
Gold OG 2021 1500m
Without his father coaching him: 8
Gold WC 5000m 2022
Gold WC 5000m 2023
Gold OG 5000m 2024
Gold indoor WC 1500m 2025
Gold indoor WC 3000m 2025
Silver indoor WC 1500m 2022
Silver WC 1500m 2022
Silver WC 1500m 2023
He also won 4 DL finals, all of them without his father’s coaching

Gjert had NOTHING to do with any of this.
Gjert had EVERYTHING to do with this. He created Jakob and built his base and competitiveness.

Thank you.
If I may, how are you "Official JI"? Jakob gave you permission to post on his behalf?
I mean.... he ran 7:17 the same year he was injured. He just peaked way later and broke the WR on August 25th. That was a few weeks after Paris Olympics...when most people were past their peak.
My guess is Brussels and Zurich are prime chances for the 5K WR. Or If there's a really late season meet like Rieti. He can get pacemakers that didn't make their world champs team...esp later in the season.
Too much racing causes this. I do not expect Grant Fisher to remain injury free this season.
Josh Kerr made a decision to not be ready for first GST because it would be too much racing.
Remaining on the top of your game for several months is dangerous and never a good game plan.
Anything can happen to anyone at any time. Training and competing at the highest level must be a really hard balance.
Sure hope Jacobs situation isn’t too bad.
You sound rather smug about Grant Fisher. For track racing fans let’s hope he and the many great athletes trying to do their best and entertain track fans can be injury free fully knowing stuff happens and they are doing their best to minimize that risk. GST is new and does require multiple races. That is why Grant Fisher didn’t push it in the first slam and did the least he had to do to win. Many on LetsRun chastised him for that and want to see super fast races all of the time which is a selfish view. He stated that he took some downtime after his indoor season and surely wasn’t anywhere near top form for the first and second Slams. Grant ran 400m to win the 3,000m and 200m to come away with enough points in the 5,000m to win the first Slam. The second Slam he ran 120m fast in the 3,000m and pushed a hard mile to win the 5,000m for his second Slam victory. Very smart running, limiting his chances of injury. Who knows how the next two Slam will materialize. I wish him well.
As for Kerr, he was coming off of injury that happened during indoor season. It showed in his first Slam that he wasn’t in form. His second Slam it showed he had a good training block.
These guys are smart runners. They and their coaches understand the challenges of a long season far better than any of us writing on LetsRun. Let’s not hope for or predict negative outcomes.
Terrible news. The sport is better when Jakob is at his best. Worried for Jakob. An Achilles injury can be an existential threat to his career, especially in the 1500. He needs to shut things down for as long as needed to get healthy, really healthy.
No. Do whatever he can to get through this season and then he needs to have surgery immediately after the season is over. Once my achilles started hurting, it kept hurting until I had it operated on.
But the guy who did my Achilles has helped Jakob with his. And he doesn't do surgery lightly. He wouldn't operate on mine unless I'd take 3 months totally off to try to heal it first.
So he'll get good advice. But if there is a chance this comes back, I'd just operate. Next year is the year you want to miss. He doesn't want this being an issue for years like it was with Chris Derrick.
