We changed the title to add in the info about the old record and to add in the info about Rylee Blade. According to TFN, the old US HS record was:

15:25.27 Elizabeth Leachman (Champion, Boerne, Texas) 2024.

And the old US jr record was:

15:20.57i Sarah Disanza (Wisconsin) 12/06/14

Jane is an amazing athlete with an amazing team behind her ( in every sense of the word ) my family was always big into track and I loved it in high school and was extremely mediocre ( if that ) I loved the sport and love coaching and have been absolutely honored to work with all those listed above and it’s been an honor to work with Jane and will continue to be a huge Jane fan when she runs for Coach Taylor next year and BYU.

If you just watch Hedengren's stride in her dominating NXN win, you can see the potential. After her sub-9:40 at Simplot I predicted she'd smash the national record in the 5000m by at least ten seconds, which she did here. There is surely more to come in a race against collegians and pros, maybe even a sub-15 this year. However, I don't know how anyone could possibly have predicted the 15:16 for Rylee Blade, besting both her mile and 3k pr's enroute.

Actually, I suspect, but don’t know, that they may add more than a couple of seconds from their cushioning superior to that of old, rather than from a trampoline effect.

I knew a USATF certified coach that said one gets seven years of progression before topping out. One of the reasons Tuohy was better than her peers in high school was because of her high volume of training. (There is another potential reason I won’t mention unless astro keeps popping off.) So consequently, Tuohy may simply be topping out.

More and more high school girls are also now putting in higher volumes of training, and the records are falling.

To add (in case it’s not obvious, since high volumes of training alone does not define a record breaker), some of them will have better running genetics than KT.

I don't buy that. If you suppose the average very high level girl starts to seriously train between their junior year of HS and freshman year of college, that would call for a peak between 23 and 25 for women. There are A LOT of women who peak later than that.

Though maybe you need to go to drugs for that to happen.

Hiltz, Houlihan, ESP; all running their best times ever between late 20s and 30.

Amazing that high school girls are running as fast as Tuohy is as a pro. Imagine if I predicted that 6 or 7 years ago. There would have been pages of insults. Yet, it is the truth. Hedegren will be 14:45 as a college freshman. The future of American distance is bright.

Leachman was only a couple of months past her 16yr birthday when she ran 12 seconds fast than KT’s time. Is she too struggling with injury currently?

Did you mean to say that she has completely unwound or hasn't unwound? She ran 15:07 at the beginning of the month. It's probably not where we thought she would be but she'll be fine. Also, she is still only 22 years old so a bit away from "mid to late 20s."

The thread is supposed to be about Jane Hedengren, not Katelyn Tuohy. If I were to look back I would guess that the haters derailed it somewhere along the line, as usual.

So where is Claudia Lane, Mary Cain, Baxter, Cook, etc., etc., if some peak later than early 20’s (and/or seven years after serious training development) is an absolute?? Obviously, it is not, and such unrealistic expectations may not be healthy.

Not hard to predict. Blade actually defeated Hedengren in cross country at the Woodbridge Invite just this past fall.

It's running, just because at one race in December '24 someone wins a race by 40 seconds, does not mean for the rest of their life, they will always beat that same field by 40 seconds.

I make bold prediction that Blade, Engelhardt and Leachman will each beat Hedengren in some head to head race over next 2 years. Nothing against Hedengren, but all 4 are record setting runners, who will have both good races and bad races. Spring track will be exciting.

Congrats to Jane on the record!
