A lot of guys see a 1:46.98 and think it's not that far off from a 1:49 but this honestly is two different levels. 1:46 indoors meant you had a good chance going 1:45, which everybody remembers less than a decade ago that got you a pro contract. 1:54 -> 1:46 in 3 years. Only person I know with this kind of progression hs sophomore/jr moving on to college, Hoppel/Harris/Sumner all ran 49-50 second 400's by hs sophomore year or a 1:53-1:54 800. Harris and Sumner were running 1:44-1:45 freshman yr, Hoppel was one step behind and did it his sophomore year. Only way you can get this type of progression is with puberty man. Guess who else had a suspect transition, now I know why people were very suspicious about Clayton Murphy back then 1:54 sr. year hs to 1:45 sophomore yr. college. A year after that he's chasing a doped up Makhloufi to get bronze..in the 800. On everything I love if I take a Murphy from hs and ask him to break 50 in the 400m he's not doing it, nor was he this aerobic monster. Now answer this how many 4:22/1:58 guys (Tuohy) were able to run 1:46 indoors, that list has to be extremely short? How many 1:54 hs guys (Murphy) have run 1:42-1:43 hell even 1:44-1:45? Don't talk to me about being extremely undertrained when these guys ran all 4 years of hs.
